Hey Rand what topic has NOT been beaten to death ...
Sorry I read a "Why don't we form/have a union" thread today, as I do every six months and I thought I would have my very own poll. Cool huh ... sure beats what is a "What is your favorite (blank)" poll, does it not. |

Well, I thought about this.
It would take the formal organization of an association first and foremost. Who'se gonna do it?
Secondly, there would have to be some form of income for this group. Then it gets political because we would have to elect the "superiors".
Then there is red tape, more politics...etc. etc.
We would have to form an opinion on major items. I have seen how people (including myself) do not let an arguement die.
Even IF we all got together and formed something, there would be too many chiefs and not enough indians.
In principle, a good idea.
In practice....not so good.. |

you guys have totally missed the point! the "union" is simply an excuse for us to get together and have a molotov tossing contest! forget these once a month "bar" get-together things....how dull!!

O.K. judging by the VAST variety of responses, it is clear that a union would never fly.
Too many differences in opinion and there would be a severe lack or organization.

Wouldn't a union take all the fun out of working in Korea? |

If current laws don't allow non-residents to join a union then, to quote whoever, 'the law's an ass'.
God knows a union for foreign teachers is begging to be set up here.
I'd pay union dues if my interests were to be protected. |

Yes, this is another major reason why it won't work.
In theory it's a good idea, but anyone trying to get a union off the ground is seriously wasting their energy.
If someone came up with a VIABLE way to do it...(legal as well), I would help. (sucker for punishment methinks) |

Wouldn't the best way to handle the turnover issue be to not allow first-timers to Korea to enter it?
Not that that's easy in and of itself to set up, but yea. Plus, it would defeat the purpose of a, uh, union. I think. |

No, because then you are in a situation where those who truly need help the most don't get any at all.. |
