| I'm a bit confused about what I need to take with me on a visa run (e-2). That is, all documents. Also, what and where do I get the visa issue number? |

If you are going to Japan you need:
passport
visa confirmation number
passport photos (1 or 2 can't remember)
application form at the counter
application fees (just went up).
The visa issuance number is given to your employer by the immigration office after they apply for it.
Your employer then passes it on to you.
They will have had to give your documents with apostille to immigration to gt the number (along with some documents from their side).

You can also fill out the form ahead of time. You can find it online. It will save you a LOT of time because as soon as the doors open, there will often be a hoard of people hurrying in and the filling out the form. If you already have it filled out, you can just walk up to the counter and hand in your application. It seems that very very few people ever fill it out ahead of time.
Also, if you happen to lose your photos or for some other reason didn't have time to get a set made, there is a photo booth right there in the consulate in Fukuoka. I haven't been to Osaka in a long time so I can't remember if they have a booth or not. The last time I was in Tokyo, they did not have a photo booth (at least not one that I noticed). Still, you'll save yourself time by bring a set with you. |

I think that most ATMs will take foreign cards. The problem is more often that the cards/accounts aren't set up to work abroad. I was once in Japan with a Korean friend and one of his bank cards wouldn't work. He hadn't set it up in advance. But bringing local currency is definitely a good idea, especially for paying the visa fee. It will save time, especially if your flights arrives just in time for you to hurry to the consulate right before it opens.
By the way, if you have to choose which consulate/embassy, here's some advice. Many people that I've met prefer Fukuoka. It's very easy to get around and it has enough to keep you entertained while you wait for your visa. If your employer is paying for the visa run, then you might consider Tokyo. It takes an extra day to get the visa there, it's more expensive and it takes longer to get around, but it's a city definitely worth visiting (especially on someone else's dime). |
