Came across this today and thought it was pretty weird. I don't really get it, is this what Japanese / Koreans think of us - long noses with blonde hair?

Yes, obviously. Just like we associate straight black hair and squinty, slanted eyes with Asians.

An ad doing the reverse would cause a huge outrage.
It would get pulled immediately with massive boycotts, lawsuits, outcries of racism, etc.

This one will will just quietly disappear without much fanfare. It's not overly malicious but the double standard is there. Could American Airlines run a reverse ad about Asians? Nope.

Was flipping channels and saw this on O'Reilly Factor and they were merely puzzled by it. Even the easily offended O'Reilly was just mildly scratching his head over it. "What does the big nose MEAN? He just looks like Pinocchio!"

Obviously not 'all' Asians think of foreigners that way. That would be a sweeping generalization. Has there been a study segmenting a high proportion of the population to determine this? I'd be interested in seeing the link if so.

Its caricature. Which apparently if aimed at any group nowadays is considered offensive. The world sure has grown thin-skinned in my lifetime.

When I fly back home to Canada, I immediately notice big noses in a strange array of shapes.

Ad wasn't offensive, just dumb. In Korea the 'big nose' image usually accompanies an article about "foreigner crimes". There was no such implied message in the ANA advert. It was just stupid.

That ad isn't offensive. It's just stupid. Not funny.

Stuff is only offensive if you choose to take offense. People should calm down, but it is pretty annoying that whites are the only group you can get away with making fun of.

ANA pulled the advert. Too many complaints were received.

http://www.tokyoweekender.com/2014/01/anas-latest-ad-bad-or-really-bad/

Japan is a small, isolated country and they really don't play or mix well with the rest of the world. And it was a closed society for so long.

Besides, all those old oyajis running the country are out of touch with the rest of the world and unwilling to change or keep up.

I'm surprised they were awarded the Olympics.

Amazing.

Aren't they supposed to like large noses, blue eyes etc. That's fine with me because I go crazy over their straight black shiny hair. I also like their eyes.

What would you rather be? A Chinese person living in the People's Paradise or a Japanese living in Japan? I wouldn't have any trouble answering that question at all.

The Japanese are to be greatly admired, even if they did steal ideas from America for their cars. Laughing

Also the US should be giving China the bird and eyeing Japan as a future bulwark against China. Sorry (well actually I'm not sorry) but China is an aggressive nationalistic quagmire which still reveres the Great Helmsman. The Great Helmsman who was willing to stab anyone that saved his countries ass in the back and was kind enough to leave us with North Korea.

Prefer the Chinese over the Japanese any day, but that is only a matter of taste, both are capable of the same atrocities.

That said, I really prefer the Chinese to backwater Japanese. Does anyone else feel similar? At least Chinese are making an effort.
