I wonder why KAIST is not mentioned in the article. Surely as Korea's top engineering school, it should be allocated a large (largest?) quota of students. |

Correction:
Pohang university of science and technology...
... is officially Korea's top engineering school [even globally] (despite the old folk still thinking different; KAIST just has a longer standing reputation). |

Well, if that is indeed the case, I wonder why Pohang is also not mentioned? |

Because, despite what many of you may think, Samsung is not at the top of the list of desired employers for many of these top engineering school grads. Most of the graduates from these schools go on to graduate studies or find better paying jobs. Samsung treats its employees like slaves and doesn't offer such great job security. Samsung knows this. That's why SungKyun (?) Uni and Hanyang Uni got higher quotas than SKY Unis and KAIST/Pohang. |

^Interesting take. I had never considered that before.
You'd still think that with the sheer number of students graduating each year from KAIST and POSTECH that they, too, would have a quota allotted to them.

POSTECH and KAIST are listed in another article as schools not revealing their quotas. I'm sure they receive a nice chunk of allotments, but these quotas aren't likely needed by those students. The quotas here are a pass to skip by the first stage of the employments process, at which stage they begin competing against thousands of others that have gotten through the same or traditional paths. Although it doesn't seem to matter much, now:

Postech is more Mechanical, Civil and Chemical Engineering heavy. The types of Engineers Samsung usually don't look for. Samsung is looking for Electrical and Computer Engineers. Companies like Posco, Hyundai, heavi industry and the energy companies raid Postech.
And as someone mentioned before, Samsung has a lousy reputation on how they treat their employees. However, Posco has a pretty good rep. Go down to one of the factory towns and you'll see what big companies have a bad rep by the number of protest banneres they have at their entrances. |

Maybe the graduates from KAIST and POSTEC don't need 'special recommendations' in order to pass the test and get hired and can handle doing it the old fashioned way? |
