Maybe around 2010, 2009 or as long ago as 2007, an article came out by a fairly large US or UK paper, wrote about ESLers mainly in Korea and probably a few other Asian countries. As a lurker on this forum I remember it showed up here. Have done a search as well as google and can't find a trace. I remember one of the main guys they interviewed was kinda harsh and didn't have very nice things to say, among them "The guys in Korea are all a bunch of addicts - it's either alcohol, or cigarettes, or online porn, or... They stay there mainly to serve their addiction of some sort."

Are you a journalist for a Korean news outlet looking to drum up some page views with another juicy anti-foreigner article, this time with a U.S. paper as a source? Wink

Nah, not at all, actually my username "ekim" is actually my English name spelled backwards, which ironically looks like a Korean name (I'm a white westerner). Nah actually I wasn't just looking for the article but actually the full thread that was on here eslcafe, wanted to read and go over some of the reactions of the posters and what not. No, I'm not a blogger or writer, just was reflecting on old times. Sorry you got me wrong...

That's cool. Yah as said before I've just been reminiscing about my long time in Asia. Now that I'm back in the US I have been pulling up memories of some old threads or news articles on the net which I read, used, and thought about while in Asia.

It's not that I agreed / disagreed with that one, it's just that you can see how once you leave Asia and get back to the West, it becomes more "over there" or "that place" or "those guys." You start to lump it all together and even make some labels and new assumptions about what life is like "over there." Once you get back to the West, it allows (causes) you start to bunch things together a little, and compare things differently, which can be both helpful and oversimplified.

With all the surfers on this forum doesn't anyone even remember that thread? I guess a lot of the guys who were on here in 07/08'ish aren't around anymore.
