|
|
While Koreans want the world to be aware of and sensitive to their culture, they often show a stunning lack of sensitivity and awareness toward other cultures. Black-face performances on Korea’s public broadcasting company (KBS) demonstrate that Korea still has a long way to go.
Will they ever get it?

This comes on the heels of the public uproar over the racists cigarette advertisements using Monkeys back in October of 2013

| It’s entirely inappropriate for 21st century television to feature people wearing blackface makeup, but KBS ― Korea’s state-run broadcaster ― must have missed the memo, or indeed the twentieth century. |
Don't agree. It all depends on how it's done. This clip from the Uk series come fly with me (2010) didn't get any complaints. Probably because the comedy came from the woman's personality not the fact she was black. I assume the gag concert sketch did the opposite and hence was offensive to some people. As with all comedy IMO, there should be no hard and fast rules (like the one above) about what's acceptable and what's not

| If you're in blackface while cracking jokes about everything but black people, is it still racist? |

| Why would a white person get upset over non-white people wearing blackface? That's racist! |

| It always depends on how it's done. I don't think most people have a problem if the makeup actually tries to look realistic, and the comedy is not just laughing at the blackface. But when you literally just paint your face black and put on a crappy wig, it pretty insulting. |

No, they'll never get it because:
those who do the blackface, by and large, love the black culture and want to emulate it
but
blacks have longer memories about the blackface, Jim Crow laws and TOBA etc can't see that and won't see blackface as adulation
therefore
blacks have to do blackface, like Louis Armstrong did in Mardi Gras '45 and tell the world: "Hey, this stuff is childish." |
