It's like the people who say that Koreans aren't reading, just staring at their cell phones who seem to be unaware that things called "e-books" have been invented.

Selfies are all the rage, there is no questioning that.

For the bolded; Who says that that you know?

You know the threads that pop up here from time to time about how little Koreans read- "I'm on the subway, and I don't see anyone reading any books. Just staring at their cell phones. Don't these people read?". It's called the Kindle App on your phone and the death of print journalism. What's next? Wondering why no one here has a record collection or slides and a projector? You mean there's a NEW Mexico?

Ummm...no, I actually don't know of those threads that 'pop up from time to time'. Weird how sometimes you are the only one that notices these things.

Searching Dave's is a chore, but a quick google turned up these threads where its mentioned, and I know somewhere out there in the murky depths is a dedicated thread about the issue.

All of the threads mention Koreans not reading and instead burrowing into their smartphones. You do realize there is a kindle app for Android, right? I have it on my phone. Right now I'm reading the Robert Gates memoir. Also a lot of newspapers and magazines have gone or are primarily digital. You know, this whole internet thing and all.

What's next? Wondering why Koreans don't write letters to people?

Funny, leafing through a Korean edition GQ at the hair salon there was an article about things missing from Seoul. Very high on the list, maybe even #2 or 3, was Kindle.

Besides, how many Kindle books are in Hangul?

Watching people quickly scrolling or constantly pushing keys or doing nothing while watching a drama tells you the great majority of smart phone users aren't reading.

I'm not sure what your point is, but saying lots of people are reading with their smartphones isn't very convincing.

I personally use the kindle app on my smartphone, not a kindle itself. I don't know what Korean e-book is out there, but I'm pretty sure there is one.

The point is that these days, just because someone doesn't have a book or is on their phone, doesn't mean they aren't reading a book. Just as people who are looking at themselves in a phone and then you hear a camera click aren't taking a picture of yourself.

Dude, the sheer weight of ebook sales and the decline in print media in favor of digital media is pretty convincing evidence that people are reading on smartphones. It's the 21st century.

E-books have yet to catch on in Korea. You are making unjustifiable assumptions regarding people reading on smartphones in Korea.

As for it being the 21st century, so what?

So Koreans don't get a lot of news or magazine type reading from the internet? As a kindle-on-phone reader, I highly doubt you can distinguish me from other normal phone users.

Also, why are you staring at people so intently that you can tell whether they are reading on their phone or not, isn't that rude?

Of course this is to say nothing of the fact that back home, the bus and subway isn't full of people diving into books either.

It's pretty easy to distinguish a game player, drama watcher, someone scrolling or chatting from someone reading. A simple glance will suffice. It's merely good opsecs to survey your surroundings.

So now you're admitting you were wrong about the book reading so you've created a new argument regarding the Internet which you also can't prove. I'd bet, if I were a betting man, that there are many more people watching the news on their smartphones than reading the news.

This has been my experience too. People reading have actual books or newspapers. People with phones are chatting, playing games, or watching tv.

And back to the topic, weirdest thing I saw was an older guy standing at the end of a little alley way whip his thing out and start to go to town. A lady was walking up the street so he put it away, scooted up the alley a bit and started again. Then he put it back and ran away when the lady started up the alley. He was oblivious to me as I was looking out the window of my apartment to see what kind of day it was.

Game players and DMB watchers are obvious as they are tilting their phones, or have antennas. Chatters as well, you can see their fingers move.. Have you actually used a kindle app on your smartphone? You scroll almost as fast as someone scrolling and chatting. At least I do because I set the text to a large size so I don't strain my eyes. This means I'm strolling every 2-10 seconds. Same with magazine articles. And no, there is no way you could tell from a simple glance. You'd have to actively stare at them, which is rude. All that is moving is their thumb at varying intervals. It could be a game or reading. So if it takes 10 seconds between scrolls, in order to tell whether I am reading or not you must stare at me for a considerable amount of time, not just glance.

I wouldn't disagree, but to think that everyone on a smartphone is not reading books, magazines, or newspapers is just being silly. It comes across as one being some sort of dinosaur.

If I was a betting man, I'd bet that if you were to take a random sample of people doing things on your cell phone and you were to guess with your quick "glances" and "awareness" that you'd be lucky to crack 50%.

I do have to wonder how you know you're right on this. Are you A) Looking at whats on their screen after "glancing" at them, thereby invading their privacy. Or are you B) Declaring your assumption as correct without any verification?

I didn't say EVERYONE wasn't reading. Will you ever stop distorting what others' post?

Very few are reading books. E-books are not popular in Korea. That's fact. Of the others, only a small minority are reading.

Your experience, i.e. having to use large print, is now universal? Most everything in Korea is in small print, so I'd take that as evidence it's not a problem for most Koreans and they're not scrolling as quickly as you.

I don't have to look at their screen. Lots of times I can hear that they're playing a game or looking at TV. If they're sitting next to me, I know what they're doing because they're poking me in the side with their elbows as they play or chat. When I'm standing on the bus, I can see what those sitting are doing with their smart phones when I look out the window.

I'm not invading anyone's privacy, so you can stop with the nonsensical red herrings.

Wow. Invading their privacy now? If there was an award for most moronic post of the day, you'd have a dynasty going. Since when is operating an electronic device in public a private matter? Should I also cover my ears when someone is speaking on the phone, or to another in person?

If you want verification, you already have two people in this thread who say the same things. I will add my observations to the issue and say that most Koreans are not reading on their smartphones. As noted above, the Koreans I see reading, are reading paper books.

I will give Steelrails some credit as I do see people reading comics on their smartphones, but I still maintain they're mostly doing what I mentioned earlier.

I was working at a kindergarten and a cassette was playing kids' songs. 'Ten Little Indians' came on, but the lyrics were:
"Transformer, Transformer, Tranformer Indian,
Transformer, Transformer, Tranformer Indian,
Transformer, Transformer, Tranformer Indian,
Transformer Indian Boy"

So you think its polite to stare at people in public?

On one thread we get people upset because Koreans are staring at them. The next thread we get a poster who says he knows what people are doing on their smartphones, but that he isn't staring at them.

In a month we'll get a thread "Do Koreans have to stare at me when I'm using my smartphone?"
