OK then....that makes complete sense. |

I agree with another poster that it's probably easier than getting a full-time job with benefits in the states.
Having said that, it is more difficult to secure a good position. I've noticed that especially men are heading to facebook to rant about it taking 5 months or so to find a position. In contrast, a white female may have access to desirable jobs in Seoul within a day or two of applying: http://goo.gl/jSxzzZ
It's possible, but not as easy as it would be for other people. It's no reason to give up. |

If you're black, apply to Public schools, Christian schools, International schools and any establishment whose raison d'etre is not exclusively profits. These places can and will employ a variety of races and nationalities. I speak from experience, I used to be a recruiter.
Privately-run operations however are businesses, they are run for profit and have few wider values. Wether their owners and directors are biased or not, they have to pander to the prejudices and wishes of their customer base. The market is what it is and business owners usually go for whatever they think will attract more custom. Unless they are subsidized, they usually can't afford to sacrifice their profits in order to challenge prevailing societal attitudes.
Parents usually want their children to learn English from the perceived dominant ethnicity of any given western country.
There is a certain logic to this that is not necesarily racism. If blacks owned and ran the US of A, I'm sure fickle Korean preferences would also change overnight.
It makes one squirm to see highly-qualified blacks passed over for less able whites in some cases, but by the same vein its also sad to see talented s.e. Asian applicants ignored for the same reasons. |

| And while we singing about life being unfair let's not forget older TEFLers or male TEFLers or ugly TEFLers or fat TEFLers (who may or may not be capable) being at a disadvantage. |

Right.
Most of us would want our kids to be taught by the dominant culture and ethnicity of whatever country concerned.
Its not racism, its obvious logic.
If you want your child to learn Chinese do you immediately seek out an ethnic minority person from China as the best possible teacher?
Do you run around looking for a Uighur to teach your child? Of course not.
You want your kid to learn the cultural references and language style of whatever demographic your child will likely be interacting with and will give them the best chance to get ahead.
Its not really racism. |

Yeah, maybe. However, at least E-2 teaching, visas for efl work are more based upon nationality, not ethnicity. That is you can be an asian from south africa, a black from england, a whomever from wherever, and you should still be able to pass the basic "qualifications". Yeah, i probably think that a korean from korea can teach my kid korean better, but i know there are many other factors at play: relationship, price, availability, etc. Koreans expecting their kids' teachers to be 100% white when teaching english is just plain wrong. Thats NOT where it is, but, yeah, we aint all THAT dumb, are we? |

But do equally-qualified black and Asian people really speak a different language style than white people from the same country? Are they likely to teach differently?
The validity of this logic rests on the assumption that this is the case. I don't know if I would call it racist, but even if this is the thought process, there is certainly some racial stereotyping going on. It might be hard for some Koreans, being from a homogenous society, to realize that many English-speaking countries aren't like that. |

Perhaps they are.
A lot of it is about cultural identification.
Koreans know that blacks aren't ruling the roost in the US. If you want to get ahead, its white people that you need to know how to interact with.

A lot of it is the image produced by the media. Most Koreans have only Hollywood or gangsta rap music etc to go on when they think of American blacks. That's not the most attractive cultural reference for the average Korean. They want academia, management jobs, Harvard, etc. |

Is this a serious question?
I don't have cartoon racial stereotypes as friends. They are into the same shit that all of my friends are into, hence the reason I am friends with them.
Getting drinks after work, playing poker every now and again, brewing beer, sports etc. |
