Why now? Why not 20 years ago?
Instead they wait until a new leader -who was not responsible for the regime he inherited or its decades of previous hideous abuses- starts making tentative peace initiatives..and then they start threatening and accusing?
Their timing is totally stupid. |

Seemingly Kim Jong Un is on his way to being even worse than his father. But yeah, it's a bit late for millions who have died either directly or indirectly as a result of the regime.
What's even worse though, is that NOTHING will be done. Zilch. Apart from perhaps an order for some of those in power now to appear before the International Court of The Hague. Which they obviously won't agree to.
Also maybe sanctions but that will be it as China will block anything stronger such as an invasion.
The UN is almost totally irrelevant as an organisation. Look what happened in Rwanda. Irrelevant and redundant partly because you have a small number of countries with permanent seats at the Security Council. |

No it isn't.
A.) The Human Rights Council didn't exist 20 years ago.
B.) The UN had little to no access in the DPRK for decades (Funfact: The Koreas didn't join the UN until Sept. of 1991. Crazy huh?). It wasn't until the last few years that the DPRK has actually opened up to UN doing routine stuff and investigations. The UN is sorta limited on what it can report when countries don't let them in.
C.) Also, this report probably started quiet a few years ago but wasn't completed until now. These types of reports take a while can sometimes lead to awkward situations (the HRC passing a resolution praising Gaddafi Libya for making improvements... nearly a year after Libya fell)
edit: Oops.. looks like the HRC told them to do it in 2013 |

Kim Jong Il and Kim Il Sung also made tentative peace initiatives, those worked out really well, so we should just give the fat boy the benefit of the doubt, despite him being in power for two years already and not to mention his not too long ago round of threats and provocations, right? |

What's next? "Police Chief accuses mafia of racketeering, drug smuggling, and prostitution"
I think Team America broke the story before the UN did. |

The report is based on accounts from defectors, genius.
Neither do you need a visa entry stamp to get evidence from satellite imagery.

Funfacts:
-the UN has been passing resolutions on matters of human rights since at least 1948.
The concentration camps have been known about since the 1960's. |

Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld Convicted of War Crimes
http://www.foreignpolicyjournal.com/2012/05/12/bush-convicted-of-war-crimes-in-absentia/
At the end of the week-long hearing, the five-panel tribunal unanimously delivered guilty verdicts against Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and their key legal advisors who were all convicted as war criminals for torture and cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment.
Full transcripts of the charges, witness statements and other relevant material will now be sent to the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, as well as the United Nations and the Security Council. |

Cool Guava! Malaysia, hey that's the country that won't allow Christians to use the word Allah to describe God, because Christians using the Arabic name for God (Allah) is offensive to to Muslims, right? |

http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Spanish_criminal_probe_targets_Bush_torture_0328.html
A Spanish judge has approved a probe of torture complaints against former Bush officials.
Six Bush-era officials responsible for crafting the legal justifications permitting the military prison at Guantanamo Bay are the subject of a Spanish criminal probe which could place the men under serious risk of arrest if they travel outside the United States. |

And...? Low level defectors speaking up is a relatively recent thing (most defectors tend to be higher level and thus were mostly kept under security wraps). And that isn't going through the whole "most defectors are scared to speak up because of politics" for most of the last 15 years. |

You should start your own thread instead of deflecting from the main article. |

I disagree with you and I will spell it out for you...
I agree with the OP that the UN council decision is untimely and stupid.
I provide information to highlight additional reasons why the UN council decision is untimely and stupid. |

No, you posted something unrelated about the US. The report wasn't done by the US, it was done by the UN, and while the US has lots of problems it is not comparable to North Korea. |

http://www.4thmedia.org/2014/03/06/imperial-conquest-americas-long-war-against-humanity-2/
Today the UN is in many regards an appendage of the US State apparatus. Rather than undermining the UN as an institution, the US and its allies exert control over the Secretariat and key UN agencies. Since Gulf War I, the UN has largely acted as a rubber stamp. It has closed its eyes to US war crimes, it has implemented so-called peacekeeping operations on behalf of the Anglo-American invaders, in violation of the UN Charter. Following the de facto “dismissal” of Secretary General Boutros Boutros Ghali, UN Secretaries General Kofi Annan and Ban Ki Moon have became a tool of US foreign policy, taking their orders directly from Washington. |
