Oh, what a fine morning it is. Yuna got the silver, while that Orser guy got the gold for Japan in the men's. She richly deserved this after the way she treated her Canadian coach. "Thanks for the gold medal...You're fired." So Korean. If she kept him on she'd probably have gotten the gold again for Korea. But, as it happened, Orser dusted himself off and went out and got a gold for Japan.

Now we wait for the conspiracy theories, cries of corruption, and the ant-Russia rants.

Good times. Very Happy

People have already questioned the decision........but in western media.

http://www.smh.com.au/sport/winter-olympics/sochi-2014-controversy-as-russian-adelina-sotnikova-upsets-korean-favourite-kim-yuna-to-snatch-figure-skating-gold-medal-20140221-334z4.html

Despite an error when she two-footed a double loop in her combination jump the teenager improved her free skate score by a massive 18 points to take a third skating title in Sochi for hosts Russia.

In stark contrast, both Kim and third-placed Carolina Kostner of Italy gave error-free performances.
"I just have faith that the judges made the right decision," said former world champion Kostner

It is strange how the Italian skater and Yuna can have no errors and the Russian has an error yet ends up 18 points ahead.

My bad, it says improved her score by 18 points.

Being the cynical bastard that I am, I think the Russian lass was most likely the recipient of some 'home-crowd advantage' - or more likely the judges were wined and dined the night before. Very much like the 2002 world cup. What goes around, comes around.

I didn't stay up to watch the event but I do find it hard to believe that she outscored Yuna & the Italian by 5 points if she was the only one to fall out of the three. I'm guessing her routine must have been much more difficult??

I don't know much about the sport of figure skating, nor did I witness the events so I can't really say if the scores were deserved or not....though I'm sure I'll hear all about it today at work.

I didn't even know she skated till it was all over facebook this morning. I did watch the three performances though. Only thing I really know about figure skating is that if you stumble or fall, you usually don't beat skaters that didn't stumble or fall unless your routine had some crazy shit.

This pretty much sums up my knowledge of the sport as well. And I wasn't really cheering for or against anyone in particular, I just wanted to see it judged fairly. Was it? I have no idea.

I don't know much about skating either, but the NY Times didn't seem to think the scoring was totally out there, for whatever that's worth:

Quote:
Sotnikova landed seven triple jumps to six for Kim and scored more than 5 points higher in the mark for technical elements, winning the long program with 149.95 points. She finished with 224.59 overall points.

Kim skated a calm and poised tango routine and finished with 144.19 points in the long program, but she did not attempt a triple loop or a double axel, triple toe loop combination, as did Sotnikova. Also, Kim did not receive the highest level for her step sequence or her layback spin. She took the silver medal with 219.11 collective points.

One of the judges is married to an official of the Russian figure skating federation, so I'm guessing it probably didn't take much wine or dine to get her vote.

Just another reason not to have purely judged events at the Olympics. There's always going to be room for some human error, but a video-playback-aided referee watching for rules violations and a panel of judges simply outright deciding who wins are a world apart in terms of potential corruption.
