They tried to do that to me at Yonsei. They sent me to the International Clinic to pay, where they added on another 15,000won or so. When they explained to me what the extra charge was for, I told them I could pay just like everyone else and went and did so without the extra fee. |

Ah yes, Asan. I went there once for a knee problem. My K gf came along to assure no translation issues. I was never taken to a consultation room or given x-rays, CT scan, blah blah. The doctor(s) diagnosed me right out in the waiting room. They weren't sure what the problem was, but recommended surgery nonetheless. They, however weren't able to accommodate me for the surgery there and suggested one of their lesser 'sister' hospitals (which happened to be the one I went to in the first place that had no clue). Anyway, to my and my gf's surprise Asan charged a ridiculous fee under the circumstances for my 'consultation'.
I ended up going to Konkkuk Uni hospital and seeing an orthopedic knee specialist that gave a non-surgical diagnosis in the end. |

There was an article in the Joong Ang Daily, maybe two years ago. It said as part of the drive for medical tourism, hospitals have been given approval by the government to charge foreigners different rates. But I would have thought that if you are covered under the NHIC as a resident, you wouldn't be charged these rates - but I guess you have to watch out.
Basically anything designed for foreigners is probably overpriced. |
