|
|
So, I opened my bank account with my co-teacher today. I got a booklet to use with the ATM at the bank to withdraw money, but no debit card. This struck me as odd. I asked my co-teacher if I could get a bank card. She asked, and said that the lady said I couldn't get a card with this account.
I think she may have thought I was asking for a credit card, because that's the term she used. We were going to the hospital and I didn't want to argue, so I figured I'd ask on here before I did anything. I was figuring going back to the bank myself after looking up some key phrases to get it figured out.
Also, what is the proper way to thank my co-teacher for taking me around to help me get all my necessary errands done? I know it's part of her job, but a thank you is definitely in order... |

1. Some of the banks have a three month waiting period before you can get your debit card. It is due to some fraud that was happening with Chinese customers iirc. They call the card a 'check card' btw. Some banks will give you one on the first day the account is opened. Check at your local branch, there will be someone there who speaks enough English to help you, just ask them.
2. Buy her a coffee / starbucks giftcard |

one,m a bank card often means a credit card. two, several banks including KB are not allowed to issue new accounts *and therefore cards, so this may be the reason.- they have a three month no new accounts exclusions period |

Any evidence to back up this racist statement?
I contacted the Financial Supervisory Service and they didn't have figures for financial crimes committed by non-Koreans so I'd be interested where you got yours.
To the OP if its Kookmin KB, or Nonghyup Bank they've been banned from issuing cards for 3 months but I thought they'd gotten around that by issuing BC Cards. Otherwise try another teller or branch, the 3 month wait for non-Koreans has never been a law. It would be illegal for starters. |

If you got an account with KB or Nong Hyup, you might want to see if your co-teacher will set up a different bank account for you. Try KEB or Citibank if you can and ask for a VISA/Mastercard check card. You may have to fight a little bit to get one, but you are able to get one. |

Do you have your ARC? When I arrived I was allowed to open an account with a booklet but wasn't able to get a bank/debit/check card until I had my ARC. |

before we get much further into this, which bank?
Some banks will mistakenly tell you this, but it's not actual policy. |

While a lot of these unsubstantiated claims are merely xenophobic, an actual race was blamed here.
If the FSS doesn't know, I'd like to know where the person got their information. |

Understandable. Well, SeoulNate, you got anything at all? If not, I'm afraid the accusation sticks. If it you got it by rumor, then that still qualifies as a non-racist statement. Let's hear it. |

We are back on the 'Chinese are a race, Korean are a race, Japanese are a race' short bus.
Everyone, please get on the bus and close the doors behind you. |

About 3 years ago my director of my department suggested that I open a Shinhan account for my salary deposits. The same thing happened to me regarding the card. The branch manager said there was a 3 month wait for all foreigners because of fraud committed by Chinese customers.
About 3 weeks later I went down with my K/American co-worker to the same branch to set up a special savings account in my name to have a certain amount of money deposited into a higher interest account. I asked my coworker to just see if I could get a card. She asked the girl behind the desk and a few minutes later there was my card.
TIK (This Is Korea).Written rules are there. Unwritten rules are there but really, it can sometimes just depend on the day and who is behind that counter. |

This. However, for me it was almost 6 years ago. I went to Shinhan with my co-teacher and I got a bank book, a three month waiting period, AND my co-teacher having to co-sign for me. The next day I went to Hana and opened an account, got an ATM card, a debit card, and a credit card. At Shinhan I was also told the reason for the 3 month waiting period was due to Chinese customers. |

Not really, there isn't any context to these figures let alone proof.
As an example of this last year 50% of the murders of a Korean citizen in Brisbane, Australia were allegedly committed by a Korean citizen. There were 2.
I wish we had Korean banks operating in my country to moderate the ripoff local banks. But Korean banks are too xenophobic to successfully operate in my country. Someone suggested Citibank, but in my experience they are one of the most xenophobic in Korea. I was declined a checkcard and I'm an F5 |
