Long story short my school decided that a 1 million bonus in my contract became 'optional' depending on the principal. Knowing what a cheap skate my principal is I thought I was doomed.
Then I remembered how much he cares about what foreigners think of Korea and I hatched a plan. I told the coordinator that I was planning on using the money to take a trip to Jeju with my family. We really wanted to experience Jeju one more time before we returned to the States.
She told the principal and he liked the idea of foreigners wanting to experience as much of Korea as possible. So he released the money and I swiftly wire transfered it to my U.S. account.
I don't like duping my school but I also don't like my school changing the language of my contract. I think we both win because I got my money and he got the impression I care about 'experiencing' Korea.

Do they still believe you're going to Jeju? You should have said Dokdo, you might have been given 2m |

I was supposed to go over the January vacation. They never asked about it when I returned in Feb. I didn't mentioned it either. If I said Dokdo maybe they would have wanted to go with me....yikes! |

I think it's a bad thing that they would treat anyone this way and/but you had to come up with a genius plan, and it's nice to hear that you won. Good for you. That was quick and decisive action. You won a victory. Have a drink and relax. Victorious foreign man love Jeju forever! |

The language says if you stay 3 years at the school they will either pay for a round trip flight home or give you a million won bonus. I'm leaving in March so I didn't need a flight home in January.
Somehow the *either part of my contract became *depending on how the principal feels. My plan B was to just take the flight home for a week and say hi to my friends. The worst part is my flight is 1.2 million which is more than the bonus....what sense does that make?
I love how jingoistic Koreans are. We had a farewell dinner last night and I had to say a few words. I talked about how great Korea is and I finished by saying, "I love kimchi"...and I got a roaring ovation from the 40 or so teachers and staff. |

OP, good on ya. We are disadvantaged by so many shady dealings here in Korea. It's always good to hear about a waygookin playing the game back at them and winning one.
Actually, that would be a great thread in itself. "How did you get one over on your shady employer in Korea?' |

Well done. If the bonus was a written stipulation, you could have taken it to the 'nodongbu' (labour ministry) and they would have backed you anyway. Very nasty and awkward situation I know, but it was the road I was forced to take with the Korean 'sajang' of a trading company I worked at after he threw a three year old toilet tantrum after I legitimately refused a request I was no longer obligated to perform and he refused to release my severance pay. That was 2004. Never worked for a Korean employer since and nor do I ever want to again. |

My contract was 2 million cash if you renew, a flight home if you don't. I told them I was staying in Korea but not renewing, how about 1 Mil? They said no, "you get nothing then." So I changed my mind, booked a refundable 1-way home for 1.6 Mil. They gave me the money, and I refunded it.
Cost 1.6 Mil vs. my 1 Mil offer. |

It worked in your favor at least, and you were totally right to use it to your advantage. |

More good news for me. My school was holding my severance until I moved out of my apt and everything was paid. I move out on March 7th so that was the date they were to transfer my funds. Ooops...they transferred all my money on Feb. 28th. Somebody didn't get the memo. |
