I feel sorry for US soldiers. They are mostly young and many of them think they are doing something really noble when that is far from the truth. And these days many return home really effed in the head. |

No. Their actions are noble. They are protecting the world from scumbag religious zealots who think killing people will get them into heaven. Al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations pose a real threat to the world. |
I think both of you forget or least aren't sure why most people enroll in the military. In my experience, they simply need a job or some way to pay for college. The military is an extremely easy job and it's very easy to do a good job by simply doing what you're told. I'm not saying there are hardships and some sacrifices, but the actual jobs themselves aren't difficult.
Anyone who enlisted within the last 10 to 12 years pretty much knew they were going to get deployed, I did and that's exactly what happened. You also have to remember that during a war, getting volunteers is somewhat difficult and standards were lowered in order to meet recruitment goals, which is probably why there are so many people messed in the head. Though I'm sure there were many who were messed in the head before they went, war just exacerbated the problems they already had. Here is an article from 2005 saying just that. Now that you have unemployment where it is, the military is a good job and they can be far pickier with who they let in. Don't get me wrong, there are people who join because they want to serve their country, but in my own personal experience, they were the minority.
As someone who has been to war, which I'm sure there are many on here who have as well, to say their actions are noble is not only comical but somewhat naive.
World Traveler, I hate to say it but I think you've had too much of the Kool aid:

Soldier worship is a recruiting tool, first and foremost. The benefit there is obvious; you get impressionable young people to sign up to do something that, objectively, is a horrible idea most of the time. However, it's also a social tool.
By social tool I mean that its powerful propaganda that instills certain ideas about war in the general citizenry. Roughly, it goes something like this: soldiers are honorable heros = what soldiers do is honorable = the military is honorable = war is honorable = otherwise unforgivable government action is unquestionable. That's obviously a really simplistic way of saying it, but that's the end result. It creates war apologists. Most discussions about the ills of war will be shouted down as if you're slandering a religion.
Anti-war and anti-imperialism were strong sentiments after Vietnam. The government obviously had a problem with that, but with the burgeoning information age, it was difficult to convince people that war was some how ok. Instead, they pick the smallest instrument of war, the soldier, build a hero myth and kick the propaganda into high gear. The result is that they can still make unforgivable wars and people will largely support it at first, the ranks are staffed and in the end there are very few protests. You can even see people mentally grappling with this saying "I support the troops, but not the war".
An interesting side effect of this is that some young men join the military believing the myth and eventually realize they're actually doing something horrible. It causes massive depression when it's far too late. And so you see soldier suicide rates skyrocket. In the end you just have to look at the VA to see that the government doesn't believe their own myth. |

What was the numbers of the civilians killed? Who killed most of the civilians? You don't have any sensibility at all.
Actually I wonder if you could come up with unbiased numbers for Vietnam as well. |
Why is it your first reaction to that statistic to try discrediting it? Wtf is wrong with you? You guys are great operatives for your murdering governments.
Anyway, I believe the film is called The War You Don't See. It also highlights war crimes committed by the U.S. military if you care to learn something new. |
The statistics are being used by a person with an agenda, therefore I would want to know the details about the statistics. Statisticcs can be garbage, if the numbers being put in are garbage, garbage in garbage out. |

sorry "world traveler" but if you had actually traveled the world as your name would suggest, you would realize that in fact, most people in the world dislike americans as tiger fancini mentioned.
i have spoken to so many people around the world that dislike americans, including many koreans.

weird rambler, stop. just stop.
travel the world as you seemingly aspire to and you will learn.
i'm not "hating" by the way. your small pathetic mind can't seem to wrap around that concept. once again, i like america. i'm just merely telling it as it is. travel even a fraction as much as i have and meet locals and if they are comfortable being candid with you then you might have a little revelation on how much people around the globe actually dislike americans. |

People can simultaneously dislike America and Americans for a variety of reasons, and like them and the country for completely different ones, and these can change from day to day.
The way I see it, a lot of people's attitude around the world towards America is like their attitude to the manager of their favorite team. One minute he's a genius, the next minute he's worse than Hitler. I bet those polls can fluctuate wildly based upon the latest news. |

The military is to there to defend our country, not burn others to the ground. We have to stop sending the military to murder people for government and corporate interests.
However, most people don't care about the murdering and terror that the U.S. government commits just as long as they have their Wii, P2P, iPads, Walmarts and their Ford Escalades. Screw the rest of the world!
But then they're surprised when people fly planes into their buildings. |

Thank You, World Traveller, But If You Don't Mind I'd Rather Have My Tongue Beaten Wafer-thin By A Steak Tenderiser And Then Stapled To The Floor With A Croquet Hoop. |
