My attitude and outlook on life has changed. I feel almost like I'm drifting in korea not advancing in life but coasting. Many of my friends are married with children and I'm still single. My friends have houses and big time jobs while I'm still generally where I started. I know one day I'll look back and miss this but at least I'm debt free unlike the majority of my friends.

You're debt free, but they've got houses.

Yes he was telling us how he doesn't like to speak Korean to Korean women any more cos they immediately jump on him.

Lol. Two ways of looking at anything I guess.

Top the OP:If you feel you are drifting, then you probably are. If you want the family, career and houses of your friends, then go get them. Its not that hard, you just have to set goals.

Success depends on your own personal standard however, do not compare yourself to others. If you're happy where you are, then don't let anyone tell you what you should or shouldn't be doing.

Despite the formula people push onto eachother (House+ career+ car + spouse+ baby)- its not for everyone. Looking around today it should be obvious that the last thing the world needs is even more people. Happiness does not consist of fulfilling other people's expectations for your life. Not many people are strong enough to resist societal pressure, but thankfully we are all unique and have our own paths to follow.

OP, your problem can be found in the language of your thread title "Korea has changed me". You believe that outside forces and your environment are responsible for your happiness and purpose in life. You don't believe you are in control or responsible. Korea hasn't changed you. You've changed you. Take control!

Nothing of what you just said relates to Korea at all.

If you were back home and working a similar job with little chance of advancement, single and living in an apartment you'd still be envious of your friends careers and families.

It's not Korea, it's you. You're getting older and you're realizing maybe you need to start thinking long term.

Hi,
Don't feel so bad. I have the same feelings sometimes too (ESPECIALLY after a phone call with mom!). I worry that I should be accruing interest, buying stocks, looking at real estate, being a mommy and wife, ....all those domestic "settled down" issues that most people our age are thinking about / living.

But....when I do go home and visit my friends with homes, kids, lifetime jobs (not so much anymore on that front, but in any case they're NOT jet-setters like me), boats, craft fairs, and babysitter drama....all they want to do is hear about MY life. They tell me how lucky I am to have complete and utter freedom. They want my life. They want my huge array of choices. When I start talking about my next vacation destination, they get pissed off. "I can't believe you just get to teach and travel and come and go when you please!!"

Yes, they love their life too. But I think we both love my life more....

We've chosen the path less traveled...and I think we're modern-day explorers in the age of technology and global economy. It's downright cool. Just think of yourself as...a pirate. Wink

One piece of advice: get out of Korea. I was there for a few years and made the move to China. I've never been happier!!

It's a combination of social environment and genes.

OP, wait until you're 38 - 42 years old, you'll go through another change where you despise the human race and can't stand to listen to even 5 seconds of bullshit.
