No cert- what are my chances with Epik, JLP, or GNET?

A bit about me:

-No certification
-Strong resume when it comes to working with students (I've done a bunch of leadership stuff at my university, if that matters)
-I have taught two classes before at my university, but it was through an experimental program that allowed students to design/teach their own classes. My class was on mindfulness meditation. It was more informal- nothing professional like a legitimate teaching job.

What are my realistic chances of getting into the above programs?

If I want to teach in the fall semester intake, is it too late for me to enroll in a certification course over summer?

Thanks!

Most (all...) of the programmes require at least a 100 (120?) hour TEFL certificate.

What talks in Korea: graduation diploma, training certificates, good looking glossy photos. That's what you see when you walk into an office, hagwons, and that's what impresses potential customers/students/parents. Call them shallow if you want, but this is a highly competive society and very little time for decisions. If you want to party, bring a bottle. Cool

Degree in education (B.Ed or teacher's licensure) = no worry.

Unrelated degree and less than 2 years of verifiable teaching experience OR
Unrelated degree and no TEFL cert = no job with EPIK.

Get a TEFL/TESOl cert or you'll be working in a hagwon and wishing you had a cert.

I've been Public School for years and have no additional certificates of any kind. IE No TESOL. Probably would have got one, but the Unis in my town never seem to want to offer one during the evenings or weekends. So, there they have it.

You got in before the changes and now have the "classroom" experience in lieu of the TEFL cert.

Apples and Oranges.

Yeah, guess you're right on that one. Ha ha. Sure glad I got here when I did. I can't speak to others but I do know that when I first came over here, it would have been next to impossible to get one. I smpathize with some of you newer grads in this regard.

Coming out of school heavily in debt, you probably don't have extra money to take a TESOL. I sure didn't. (Also, rural EPIK was so desperate when I first got here that they even paid my flight directly, which they normally don't do. I didn't have the money for that either.) Add to that, if you don't live in Toronto, Vancouver, etc it's probably difficult to get a fully credible in class one. (My maritime town didn't offer one.) So, you not only have the expense of the course, but also the travel or flight to a big city, then some kind of accomodation expense. Easily another 5 or 6 grand.

No one is looking for a sob story. It's too bad there wasn't some kind of co-ordinated effort to get all foriegners here a TESOL by parially taking classes online and making the "national universities" offer classroom training on the weekends. But, don't hold your breath. Anyways, if I were a newbie today poor of cash, I'd go to a hakwon, get the pre-paid flight (EPIK has flight re-imbursement), pay the minimum on your debts, bank the rest, and then take the cash in the bank and get a real TESOL somewhere - later on, go home - chill, re-apply to public schools. It sucks that the poor always face the biggest barriers like this, but that always seems to happen when the economy's bad for a prolonged time.

Whatever you do, don't default on debts as tempting as it is once you get over here. Otherwise, you won't be able to go home for a long time and Korea will own your @$$.

Why aren't I taking my own advice? I'll go home spend the 5 or 6 grand to get a TESOL or CELTA in Terana (Toronto) and get my @$$ to a good paying ME job. Ha ha ha.

If you search on Groupon you can find discounted TESL certs. With your experience it will probably suffice. THey go anywhere from $70-$150 and are 150 hours. Just get it over with, they will only take a couple weeks and are something to put on your resume.

Pardon me for being a total noob, but what do you mean by "ME job"?
