Move over Metrosexuals, here comes the Yummy!

He’s a man who’s made, or, come on, inherited, his money and wants to show it off via some conspicuous consumption. In the report, Mintel researcher Richard Cope explains that more young men now are getting into “yoga, beauty goods and the act of shopping itself.” (Not mentioned but clearly implied: frozen yogurt.) Think he’s just blowing smoke? Luxury sales are expected to grow up to 9 percent this year, and it’s not just the ladies who are fueling all that retail therapy. Here in the West, men already represent an impressive 40 percent of the high-end brand market. In China, that figure is 55 percent.

What did yoga have to do with anything? Seems a bit disconnected from beauty products and shopping for luxury brands in terms of characterizing this 'yummy' construct they're to push. (Not the authors of this article, but the material they're referencing.)

Conspicuous consumption is an apt phrase though, and very useful over here.

Every 10 years or so, the media comes up with a new term for men who take care of themselves or whatever. In the 60s it was the (faux) hippies who cared too much about their hair and clothes. In the 70s it was the glitter boys, and then the disco boys. In the 80s, the yuppies. The 90s was the pretty boys. 00s = metrosexual. And now it's the Yummy or whatever it is.

I mean, really. Rich men spending money on luxury items?! What a scoop! The 9% growth in luxury spending is likely more indicative of the global economy rebounding than a new subculture of men.

As for yoga, even hockey players are doing it now. Get over it.

The article said they have nothing on the guys with money in the 1920's, reminded me of The Great Gatsby movie in the clothes closet scene. That's just sick. Any man that needs more than 20 shirts and pants, regardless of their price is just over the top imo. I'm guilty of buying a coach wallet, but that's about the extent of it. Except for my $800 umbrella of course. Razz

But a good umbrella is a must when living in a country with torrential downpours, where every establishment is a potential treasure trove for umbrella thieves. Keep your umbrellas close Yummies!
