Don't most such restaurants end up changing their menus and recipes to suit Korean tastes, thus diversity isn't truly being encouraged? |
Well theres some that does what you said and some that are more authentic.
I personally like vietnamese made pho. There was one in my old officetel in kwanghwamun. It was pretty packed most of the time. One of the few Restaurants i seen in Korea where people eat by themselves too. Other than kimbab jibs |

If a bunch of fat, white Americans poured into K-town in any US city, bought the property, jacked the prices and menus, lowered the quality, took all the seats, demanded to watch NASCAR on the TV's and blare country music on the stereo, vibed any Asians still remaining in the place, and even restricted entry of Asians or other groups into certain clubs, you might hear some complaints about that too. In fact it'd be an outrage. Yeah, a few would be happy more money came in, but many would miss the Asian vibe of the place.
As far as "diversity" of food goes, yes there are more, overpriced, wanna-be western restaurants around lately, but that's not why people go to Itaewon. Itaewon was basically the ONLY major place where you could get true authenticity and a break from Korean style day to day annoyances when you needed it. Now that's changing fast. There's still some decent restaurants and it's more "upscale", but don't expect everyone to be happy about all the K-style changes. I don't go often but it was nice for a change of pace.
But, as we've been told, Korea is for Koreans, so in that context the changes make sense. I'm surprised Itaewon stayed unique for as long as it did. |

You're saying Koreans moved in to Itaewon, went to the foreign restaurant owners and demanded they lower the quality of food? Now, that's gangster. |

Its a little off thread now (but relevant to the OP) but something Ive never understood is why English speaking countries are so bad at making 'towns'.
I mean, you get 20 Greeks emigrating somewhere and youve got 3 kebab shops, 2 greek restaurants and a shop selling ingredients and phone cards in no time! All other countries seem amazing at doing this too.
Why dont we ever do the same?
We could have one street thats just filled with MacDonalds, Baskin Robbins, Dunkin donuts etc., and loads of sports/Irish bars, and little flags everywhere, and saloon style doors on all the buildings, and superheroes fighting demi-gods, and girls getting their jubblies out for beads, and call it 'America town!'. (Im sorry if thats not what its like, I get all of my information about the USA from movies and porn).
But seriously, I never understood that when Brits or anyone else semi-colonised a town/city, why we didnt make a little version of our own home? At least have shops and restaurants that would cater for our food tatstes. We just sit about complaining about all the foreign food instead, and go to stupid lengths to buy weetabix and marmite...
This is a prime example of what we should be doing... (skip to 2:35m in).

I think it's because most places have all they can handle with one or two aussie bars, much less a whole town of yahoos.  |
