"The way he told it, he was celebrating the end of his contract at his friend's apartment down the hall from his room. He had a ticket booked to leave the next day. They got pretty drunk. He figured someone called the cops because of the noise (they had been talking really loudly in English). At one point in the evening, as people had left and they both were tidying up the room, he said his friend tripped and landed arms first in the glass of the sliding door, breaking it and cutting himself. He claimed it wasn't too serious, just a few minor cuts, so his friend cleaned himself up with a towel, threw on the floor, and went to bed. The teacher was supposedly sweeping the floor when a cop got there. He said the cop saw the Korean passed out from drinking so much, saw the bloodied towel, the white guy, and put 2 and 2 together and came up with five. The cop pulled out his gun and aimed it at the teacher who claimed he quickly raised his hands and shouted 'Chingu, chingu!'. The cop shot two or three times, hitting him in the leg. He claimed he was denied treatment at the hospital because the insurance wouldn't cover injuries incurred during an arrest. I supposedly took a day or two before he could come up with the money. By then, it was too late. He had apparently developed nerve damage, which he claimed was caused by the delay in treatment."

I remember he had a blog up for several years about his attempts to gain justice. He went home and contacted one of his Senators. He wanted some acknowledgement from the Korean government that a mistake had been made. The story reported by the Korean media was that a Korean police officer had justifiably shot a crazed, knife wielding English teacher. Victimhood has become part of Korea's national narrative, and Koreans are certainly not above changing the facts to fit that narrative. They are often reluctant to admit that sometimes Koreans are the victimizers and foreigners the victims. |

He was an officer in the Army. Got out and stayed in Korea to teach English. He first posted that story in 1998. AFAIK, he walked with a limp after that episode, don't know if he still does. I remember him saying that he and his roomate were both drunk and I think if memory serves me right, they got pretty loud that night. The popo was inexperienced and made a bad judgement call thinking that he'd stabbed his roomate. Sad story.
The other guy that got stabbed to death by the Korean guy was right after IMF was in full swing, some said it was a retaliatory thing because he'd lost everything in the crash. |

That doesn't make sense. The chaebols brought Korea to the brink of economic collapse because of their excessive reliance on debt and reckless expansion. The IMF bailed out Korea with a multibillion-dollar aid package. So foreigners should not be blamed for the crisis. They actually saved Korea. |

The sentiment (or conspiracy theory if you will) at the time (other people who were in Korea and on these forums should be able to back this up) was that the IMF was "out to get" Korea. A lot of people lost their shirts, there was a lot of anti-western sentiment out there. |

It makes sense as in: rapid change of fortune make people angry and they will do irrational things. You know, like that Greek guy who beat the crap out of a Chinese tourist during Greece's recent financial troubles, because he thought the tourists were illegal immigrants taking jobs from him. |

my bad, thought the story was about Darrin Rossi the expat who either was shot or thrown through a window by the Korean police. He founded the other site and eventually died in states as result of PTSD around 5 years ago

The IMF weren't out to get Korea, but they did place pretty harsh conditions on the 3 Asian countries that got the bailout that they haven't required on their recent bailouts in Europe. |

Yes, I remember that case, and shortly afterwards my (canadian) roommate killed himself here in 1999..... at least that is how the police ruled it.... he had gone MIA, and was finally found 3 days later by the cleaning lady dead in a nearby yogwan room... |

The IMF and the World Bank are not your friends. Kudos to Korea for paying those globalist vultures off in record time. |

I'm pretty sure you you were right with your initial guess. His friend went through the window, and D.R. was shot by Korean police. |
