Thats actually a fair reminder to teachers that might use that game sometimes. I dont, but it seems it can be put to educational uses. Just not now or for a good while.

My students were edgy today, unsure how to process the news on tv. It struck a nerve, how it could have been them.

I live fairly close to Ansan. One of the students at my school yesterday said, "My cousin was on the ferry, but thankfully they got all the students off in time!"

This was early in the day when reports said the students had been saved.

Apparently my school's trip later in the year has been cancelled due to the ferry sinking.

They weren't planning to go to Jeju though, or anywhere near the ocean. I'm a little curious to hear the rationale.

All trips in the province that the school is from have been cancelled.

Other provinces are expected to follow.....

Ah, interesting. Out of respect? Along the lines of a moment of silence?

*Edit: I was just chatting with my co-teacher about it. He said he thinks probably the 1st term trips will be cancelled and the 2nd term trips are 'postponed' for the time being, out of concerns for another accident. They want to make sure all trips are being conducted in the safest manner possible, is the impression he's under anyway.

I am curious what the average salary is of these parents who can send their child on Jeju trips. When I taught in Korea, students were sharing whatever bread they could get their hands on.

It was an unfortunate incident, but it's also unfortunate the line between rich and poor means the rich can afford private tutors and send their children to not only better schools but provide them these excursions during a school year. If the school year starts in March in Korea, then the decision to go on a field trip after only 1.5 months makes me scratch my head.

School group excursions became entrenched in the Korean school system precisely as a way for less privileged kids to broaden their outlook. Kids from impoverished backgrounds are not excluded.

April is prime time for school trips. September is popular too.

I am not doubting poorer families can have field trips, but a boat ride to Jeju? What is the cost for a Sewol round trip? Were they planning on staying at a hotel or just on the boat the whole time?

Cheaper than flying, which is how schools from my area always go there. Its a common destination. They were undoubtedly planning to put up in some cheap resort, several to a room.
