I guarantee, for (some of) those ppl who are working thursday, and taking friday off instead (if you have sports day) that the school will minus 1 day of YOUR hol allowance to take the day off.
What you are promised and what you'll get can be two very different things...... |

No, that's not legal. The contract says you get May 1st as a holiday. It doesn't count as one of your actual paid holidays. Sounds to me like your co teacher is stupid and can't read. It's your holiday and you are entitled to it. Now, if you switch it to a Friday as a favor to your school so you miss a sports day instead of a day of classes, all the more so, they shouldn't be deducting you. I'm doing the same thing, but Friday the following week. I swapped May 1st for May 9th as it's a field trip day and it's also a Friday. My school knows how to read and appreciated that I did this for them as a favor. I wouldn't accept less holiday in the summer for taking what's mine by legal right.
Bring the contract in and re-read it to your teacher. Sounds like she's not very bright or something. |

This is not happening to me, but I can see some principals doing a bait and switch.
As you said, you must have May 1st off - it's not a negotiable day to switch at yours and your schools pleasure (in the eyes of the office of education).
So for some people, they'll work tomorrow, expecting friday or another day off in lieu, only to find out that their being docked 1 days holiday to take the day off......... |

In that situation, the school would then be obligated to pay you a full day overtime for the Thursday, wouldn't they? Seems like everyone would lose. |

What? Thursday's a holiday? First I've heard of it. Anyone else with GEPIK? What have you heard?
The day off tomorrow would be awesome. |

Public schools are obligated to give epik teachers may 1st off (its explicit in the contract) or pay them double time & a half for working that day, which is unlikely. Swapping out the regulatory holiday for another schoolday, you've entered a gray area. |

Well, either way, they are still owed a day or time and a half if they work. It's the law that contract workers get a day off on May 1st. As far as the ed office, you work it out with the school and if you are all in agreement beforehand, you do it and avoid the education office. If they pull a bait and switch on you, you call the ed office complaining they forced you to work May 1st and never gave you extra pay or another day off as an alternate. Either way, stand firm on the paid day issue. I wouldn't give up a paid holiday as I gave up May 1st. (I am working today and will be off next Friday.)
GEPIK workers, contract or not, it is the law for contract workers. Hakwons should be too, but I doubt it will be honored. |

Yeah, cause what are you going to do on a Thursday anyhow? You can't travel. Long weekends are better. Fortuneately, next year will be a long weekend. But, 2016 will be bittersweet as it will be on a weekend, but also a leap year. So, instead of being on a Saturday, it will bump to Sunday. By 2017, it'll be on a Monday and another long weekend. So, either way, I won't have to work about about switching the day around again until 2018. 2020 being another leap year shouldpush it back to Friday again. Another long weekend.
See son, it's always good to have a long term plan in life. ha ha.
If we're still here after 2020, then there's seriously something wrong with us all. |

May 1st Labour Day. Businesses employing more than 4 people are supposed to be on holiday, but I walk around my neighbourhood and it's business as usual, except for banks of course. |

Did any universities not have classes on May 1? We did. But maybe it is because we did not have classes on April 17, and April 18 because of Easter. |
