If my school refuses to provide me with a letter of release once i give adequate notice, do i have any other options available?
I do happen to have an extra copy of all the required documents for an E2 visa.... so if need be, could i simply leave my school and use those documents to do a visa run with another school? Or is there some kind of time penalty if i leave my school "unreleased"? |

In Law: There is NO LEGAL OBLIGATION for your employer to issue a LOR and no legal recourse if they don't (other than going to the tax man, pension office, NHIC, etc., and filing complaints. - Won't get you released but revenge is often satisfying since you may have to change countries anyway.)
IN THEORY:
You could simply exit Korea, cancel your visa and hand in your ARC as you leave through passport control, return on the next flight and start all over again with new documents, a new job and a new visa application (with a visa run to Japan after you get the job to obtain a new E2).
In Practice:
It IS possible that immigration MAY refuse to grant a new visa confirmation number until your old contract has expired.
IF that happens then your ONLY other options are to either:
- work illegally on a tourist stamp (not without risks)
- Pick a new country (China, Taiwan and Vietnam have remuneration packages that can allow you similar savings to what you could do in Korea).

It's also possible that immigration MAY refuse to grant you a new visa for several years. And it's also possible that they MAY refuse to let you in the country at all. Plus, it's also possible that they MAY do a thorough cavity search the next time you try to pass through customs. They MAY do these things but there haven't been any reported cases of any of these things happening in a long time.
Don't sweat it. |

Immigration usually doesn't give a rat's ass about Hagwon issues unless something illegal was done by the ex-teacher, then it may be goodbye to the ex-teacher. |

Just to clarify, I wrote that to put in perspective what ttompatz wrote. He always goes on about an old policy from a few years back (a very short lived event) where they were refusing new VINs but then qualifies it with "MAY" because anything is possible. The reality though is like you say, immigration couldn't care less. New documents = new visa. |
