I believe this is the sort of thing they're really complaining about:

sorry....1.9 years is still a Newbie
sorry, this happened to you though |
You embody what I hate about expats in this country, think you know it all and others dont. Alot of people been here same amount of time or less and know lots. Reminds me of the small minded hick redneck mining town I worked in in far northern Australia, idiots there would say you can't be a local unless you had lived there for 20 years. Who gives a monkey's toss? Stop perpetuating this us and them mentality of newbies and old hands, its the last thing the expat community needs.

You really should read things in context. She was blaming herself for not knowing better because she has been here. However, one cannot expect to know so much after only 1.9 years, so she should not be blaming herself.'
I agree with Mankind.
If you don't want advice from people who have been here awhile, then keep your trap shut. I am no better than someone who has been here one day, but I am not ashamed to admit I know more. I also admit I don't know everything and I am not fluent in Korean. So what? Allow me to give what I can and don't complain that there is someone to help you. There were no internet sites and other foreigners to help me when I came.

If I did not care about the foreign community, I would not be posting on this site. As I work in a Korean company, it would be obvious I spend most of my time with Koreans.
I also believe you should not judge anyone on this board until you meet him or her in person. Anonymous internet sites are no place to learn about a person's true self. |

Straight out of a newbies mouth? Who would suggest that they no more than someone who has done something a lot longer. After your first year at Universtiy did you tell your know it all prof to shut-up because you thought you knew as much as him? Comparing 2 years and 3, not that big a difference. Comparing 1 year and 5 is. Single and married is.
You really can't please anyone. We get people complaining about long terms giving out too much advice or getting *beep* out because short terms don't want to hear it. And get the "I know as much as you!" crap.
Than we get the "How come no long timers help newbies? Why do you ignore them/us? Show some compassion you were new once too."
Well make up your minds.
Newbie 1-2 years or under (silver platter these days)
Veteran 2-5 years (came here with some idea of life here)
Longtimer Over 5 years (were here before it was all on the internet. Came here not really knowing what Korea was like at all.)

Dont presume to know anything about me chump, I`ve been here a year and feel like I have the place sussed, although I will admit there are things I still dont know. This is the 6th country I have lived and worked in and I encounter this attitude in just about every one. Its generally the loud mouthed, drunken *beep* at the bar who speaks the lingo loudly and poorly and bignotes his ability to do so. Moreover, he's generally the disfunctional wierdo who can't function or get laid at home. Sound familiar? |

Back to the OP!
Tell us more. I am looking for a job in the Bundang area (looks like a nice area) so I would actually appreciate what you'd have to say. |

| What's there to respect about living here a long time? If it was so damn hard, nobody would do it. |

Y'all are nuts.
I have ups and downs here same as in America. Work is good, social life sucks... both are good... both are bad... but I didn't have the culture shock and this cycle of depressions ain't happenin' |
It usually hits between the 6th ~ 9th month. All the best to you! |

We needen't presume anything when you give it all up so freely. Sound familiar? Yep, right down to the anonymous, bitter noob thinking he's the man after a year, telling people to back off 'cause he's seen it all, he was here first. The loser you describe may well be the one you see shaving every morning, at least your apparent familiarity would suggest intimate knowledge of this type of fool...perhaps you need new friends. Fact is, that living in a foreign country is always and always will be a minor butt-sniffing contest between who has endured the longest, and why shouldn't it? Living abroad ain't easy, and dare I say especially in Korea.we speak less like veterans and more like survivors. I suggest you stay in one place long enough to earn some respect, or are you on the lam? Hehe....and while we are at it, when in Korea, do as they do....show some respect for your seniors, boy.....or don't you have the place sussed? Perhaps this one of the few things you hadn't grasped yet about Korea?
Sorry to spank you in public, but you were showing off your diapers again.[/quote]
Boy? Jeesus, lets have a beer one night and see if you would call me that to my face, I dont think so. Other than that, kindly make sweet love to yourself, I don't really care what you or any other person here has to say, lest I ask for their 10 won's worth.
Lots of love

She's right. People got off topic because of me. I apologize for that. I wrote something and it was blown out of proportion.
Click on the link above for esl-law for information on lawyers. If your school refuses to sign a release letter, the law is still on your side. |

Here's what I wrote in the letter of release section... (3 days ago)
I really don't know what to do...
I had given my notice as the school was continually paying me late (in hindsight should have just done a runner rther than trying to be honest). The school always paid me in cash- so I have no 'banking' proof. They also never paid pension, health insurance, refused to give me severance, and refused to pay my airfare.
I want to work at another school- I have found an excellent one- but the school I am currently at will not give me a letter of release.
When I went in yesterday to collect the money for last month (17 days late) he gave me 1/3 of it. He deducted my visa costs for going to Japan and then he fired me. He said it was because I was complaining and it didnt look good me being angry and at the school. I had been going to work until the end of the month- and train my replacement teacher- so all in all I am out 2 million plus won...I sat in his office for 2.5 hours until he paid me the small amount he did...
I looked at EFL law FAQ and he has broken 6 labor laws...
What are my options? I have no proof of anything...
HELP?!!! |

wowser....my apologies for getting off-course.
Anyways, he fired you? What does this mean? Are you now free to pursue the other job? If so, you may be better off to put this behind you and go for the better job. I realize it really gets under your skin, but factually, if you can just get out and start anew, you are fortunate...many have had worse.
Without proof, it's your word against his, and you know what that means. All of the stress and possible repercussions and further legal costs would almost certainly outweigh the financial loss.
Had you done a midnight run, he sounds like the type to have caused trouble for you. Kudos for sticking it out.
What were the terms of his firing you? |
