"The nominee for South Korea's education minister is suspected of having plagiarized a thesis written by one of his students while serving as a professor, an opposition lawmaker claimed Tuesday.

Kim published his thesis in an academic journal by introducing himself as the main author and Chung as the second writer, according to Park.

The plagiarism of dissertations has been one of the main ethical lapses in South Korea when professors are tapped as ministers of the Cabinet or other high-ranking government officials.

How is it plagiarism if he cited the student as a second author? If he was the student's supervisor on his/her thesis what is the problem?

Its a bit grey, but I think perhaps the student didn't actually, willingly or knowingly participate in the teachers draft, but his original, published work was cited as being 'a second author' -when in fact it was just plagiarised.

At least that's what I read - I may be in need of correction.

The student wrote the thesis and should be cited as lead author.

I hear Korean-style tyranny is especially acute in academia, in that professors can get grad students to just about do anything (e.g., hush about plagiarism, provide sex, write papers and get no credit for them), and this charge is nothing new in Korea.

Plagiarism is a big problem. I busted a few students for it this year already. Even despite being warned they still do it.
