When the USA plays in Azteca stadium in Mexico City, the Mexican fans urinate in plastic bags and throw the piss bags at the American players. Slurs are nothing. |
Can't blame them. Most of them have lived in the US illegally. |

Messi scores in the 90th minute to put Argentina up 1-0 and it holds up to beat Iran. It was a thing of beauty - his second of the tournament.
Actually it was 90 + 1 |

Messi's late goal saves bettor $350K
http://espn.go.com/sports/soccer/story/_/id/11116564/2014-world-cup-lionel-messi-goal-iran-saves-bettor-more-350000
This one will go down as one of the craziest bets in sports betting history.
A bettor walked into the Tuscany Casino in Las Vegas on Thursday and bet $231,676 in cash for Argentina to beat Iran straight up. It was the largest World Cup wager made at the 100 William Hill sportsbooks in the state of Nevada, confirmed company spokesman Michael Grodsky.
Argentina was such a prohibitive favorite that if the team won, he would only win $20,000 (and of course get his original bet money on top of that). Draw or lose, he would lose that money.
So confident that Argentina would win, the bettor dropped another $120,000 on the same bet on Friday to win another $10,000 if Argentina prevailed.
Well, the guy had to sweat. He was four minutes of stoppage time away from losing more than $350,000. As luck would have it, Lionel Messi scored seconds after the extra time was out on the clock and gave the bettor his risky $30,000 win. |

| Ghana and Germany draw 2-2. Didn't see that coming. A bit detrimental to the US chances of advancing. |

I thought the same thing at first, but I just read an article that said that that was the best case scenario for the US.
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/the-best-germany-ghana-result-for-u-s-163815414.html
"In this scenario, a U.S. win over Portugal would put it top of the group after two games and officially clinch a place in the round of 16. A tie against Portugal would put the Americans on the cusp of sealing qualification, too.
A draw also is most ideal because all of these situations revolve around motivation. If both the U.S. and Germany go into a final game knowing that a tie would qualify both teams, then the chances of that happening drastically increase. It doesn't mean the match is fixed. Rather, it is all about risk versus reward." |

I disagree with that analysis. It would have been better for Germany to have beaten Ghana. In that scenario Ghana is out and Germany would have a stranglehold on top of the group. All the US would need to do is tie Portugal and don't get blown out by a lowly motivated German team . Germany beat Portugal 4-0. The US could have gone into the next round on goal differential. Now the US will play a German team with something to play for. Of course this all depends on what happens in US v Porto. |

I was watching the match when this guy ran out on the pitch, but they quickly switched cameras so as to not give him an audience, and since I was watching on the Spanish station Univision I did not catch what the announcers were saying. Now I know.
Nazi sympathizer invades pitch during Ghana-Germany game

And on Saturday, it took center stage again when a Nazi sympathizer rushed the field during the Ghana-Germany game. No security attempted to stop him as he took his shirt off to reveal a pro-Nazi message. He had to be ushered off the field by Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari. |

Welcome to the rest of the world. Most of the world isn't as 'sensitive' as the 'west'.
As for a few Germans painting their faces black. Some Brazilian security guy probably thought, "I wonder why they painted their face black? Oh well, they look harmless, I'll let them in." |

Like many Americans, I admit that I did not always understand the offside rule. But after poring over the regulations I feel like I now have a pretty good grasp of it, including the reasoning behind it. However, having said that, it seems like the refs get the call wrong - a lot! Also, the original reasoning of the rule was to keep players from just hanging around the goal waiting for an easy opportunity, right? But that is not what is really happening in 99% of the offside violations, whether they are called correctly or not. I think the rule should be tweaked again, as it has been before. What do you think aficionados? Do you agree, or is the rule okay just the way it is?
Bosnia-Herzegovina Robbed Of Goal By Offside Call In Loss To Nigeria, Eliminated At World Cup
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/06/21/bosnia-offside-nigeria-world-cup_n_5518605.html
The teams were scoreless early in the encounter when Dzeko appeared to put Bosnia-Herzegovina into the lead with a right-footed shot past Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama. Dzeko appeared to be onside by at least a step when Zvjezdan Misimovic released a through ball that slipped between two Nigeria defenders. From his vantage point on the touchline, the assistant referee determined that Dezko was offside and raised his flag. Referee Peter O'Leary followed with a whistle to disallow the apparent goal. |

Bye bye S. Korea.
3 goals by Algeria in 15 minutes. There is still a whole half to play but judging by the way they're playing I'd say it's time for S. Korea to pack it in. If they were playing a tier 1-2 team I'd understand the beat down but while Algeria isn't that bad, they aren't very strong either.
0 shots
0 shots on goal at the half.
Christ.
The S. Korean side must be incredibly weak. They have one of the easiest groups in the tournament and will probably exit with a draw and 2 losses. Quite pathetic.
At least, from what I've heard, S Korean fans that actually know soccer weren't expecting a lot from this young squad. |

| Well I gotta give the Red Devils a little credit. THey fought back with 2 goals. Now 4-2. The goal differential may play a part in deciding whether or not Korea goes through. However if they lose this game, they'll have to beat Belgium (possible as Belgium is unproven at this pointand they are no tier 1 favorite although they have some good players) and hope Russia smashes Algeria (also possible). |
