The powers to be sure won't change it just because I don't agree with it but...
Why call it..."World Series!?"

What's world about it! Gesh...we, the U.S. doesn't play against the world! Unless you want to count playing the Canadian teams. Still...
A world Series should be just that; the world! OK...call it the "American Series/USA Series/Baseball Series/The Golden Bat Series...whatever....and then the winning team plays against the world like the soccer playoffs!
Soccer has the FIFA World Cup and that's what it should be. But oh no...someone in the baseball hierarchy wants baseball to be the World Series!

Just killing time...feel free to chim in!

Go start your own League and call it whatever you like!

hellofaniceguy seems to be an odd name tagged to a bitter character.

This again. You do realize that the best players in the world play in the MLB, right? And that players from all over the world play in the Majors? Yoon Suk-min was one of the best pitchers in the KBO (and my personal favorite) but he can't even make the active roster in Baltimore. If you created an all-star team of the best players from every league outside the US, that team would have absolutely no chance in a 7 game series against the Kansas City Royals, and would likely be swept.

I go along with that, the best baseball players in the world play there, but the best teams from South Korea, Japan, Cuba Venezuela and Puerto Rico could play a round robin tournament with the best teams from the US and Canada to have a proper 'World Series'.

Would Partizan Belgrade, Dynamo Moscow, Panathinakos or Barcelona would take a big a beating vs the LA Lakers (team of the stars) in the basketball? let's find out, it will be fun! Very Happy

Cuba, possibly Japan. Actually, any team from the major countries could.

Baseball is a funny animal. Really prone to luck and being in form. Heck, a team that has a good knuckleballer (or even just a decent one) has an odd chance to win two games in a seven game series if the winds are right.

Because the gap between MLB and the Japan League (The best international league) is so big they really can't compare and all the Latin Leagues are people who couldn't make it to MLB.

Again, the Cubans. We really dont have much info, but they produce great talent and are baseball obsessed.

Well in a 162 game season of course things would even out. In a 7-game series and especially in a single-elimination game. You could throw Verlander out there and once-twice a season he has a goat of a game. Likewise some guy with an ERA north of 6 can have an outing where he suddenly looks like the 2nd coming of Sandy Koufax.

Like I said, the best strategy for a non-MLB team would be to throw out knuckleball/pitch-to-contact types. Try and keep the score reasonable and hope for some luck. Its baseball, it can happen. This is a sport where a great hitter gets a positive result at best 40% of the time.

I'd rate soccer and hockey as having that potential as well. Theres been famous upsets by minor clubs before in cup matches. And hockey all it takes is a hot goalie.

Id rate basketball as having less potential, but it can happen. Get someone who is chilling for a year in Europe before being a lottery pick or free agent along with someone like a Pablo Prigioni and they might surprise a team for one game.

American football? Not a chance.

Or a hot scorer, or just a system that shuts down the other team. Hockey is known for their numerous upsets, and a few of the European leagues do have decent teams. However, they play on a bigger surface and play nowhere close to 82 games. Over a season, it might wear them down. But in a playoff tournament, I can see a few teams in Europe doing very well, once they get used to the rougher play though.

Depends. Are you talking about a hypothetical dream team Cuban team, sure. If you're talking about the top Cuban league team vs an MLB team, no chance. Like most Latin American countries, the cream of the crop is great but the talent gap drops off immediately after that. All the other latin leagues are essentially filled with players who could never make it to MLB in the first place.

With the exception of Cuba, Japan and Korea, all other professional leagues are essentially feeder leagues to MLB and most of the top talent in other countries are in the MLB. That is why MLB gets to call it the "World Series."

Knuckleballers are rare and have their own problems. Pitch-to-contact type pitchers tend to be not very good since they are essentially praying on their defense. You're right though that baseball is the one game were upsets are most likely to happen but it's hard to imagine the top Cuban team taking on the Athletics.

I agree that over a 162 game season they wouldn't stand a chance, and even in a 7 game series it would be a HUGE upset and fairly unlikely, but if it didn't happen it wouldn't be SO unbelievable.

Funny you mention the As. As a Tigers fan, they looked like a powerhouse with maybe some minor bullpen issues that were coming around, then they lost 20 of 29 and looked like one of the worst teams in the MLB, then they came around again. I think it might really depend on what kind of groove the two teams were in. Not to mention weather. I couldn't picture the Cubans doing too well against some northern AA team in late October, and the Brewers might struggle in Cuba in July.

Although, I suspect that if ever a World Club Championship got started, Castro bros. would turn their league into two teams of all-stars and a rest of a league of crap ala some countries in Europe and Champions league.

Yeah, I remember a few years back Nik Lidstrom was constantly making noises about going back and playing in Sweden. I bet a few Russian clubs might give a fair performance, and of course there were those old Red Army teams back in the day.
