I'd say it's more in the look that you get from an attractive member of the opposite sex. If they're locking eyes on you or getting the mutual attraction stare, I'd say that means a lot more than some ajossi telling you you're "handsome". I'd also say if it happens in different countries, that would mean more than some artificial staring in Asia because of your light skin color, high nose, or double eyelids. |

Last time I was in Korea, most teachers had a face akin to a smashed in pineapple.
These good looking teachers were pretty much absent in my line of sight but lots of teachers I did actually know would talk about how 'cute' 'beautiful' or 'handsome' they were according to the locals, most had the sense to see it for what it was.
I have a face like a robbers dog but hey - I was called handsome too - big deal, if you need a boost in self confidence from Koreans and it is important then you are going to be real upset when they tell you that you are 'fat' 'tired' 'old' they give out the compliments with one hand then they usually taketh away with the other. It is about control via mind games usually when used in a working environment.
And good looks are so subjective, hey, if you go to Germany, Denmark, Greece or Uruguay and all the locals are coming up to you then that would have more gravitas than the Koreans who throw away these lines to everyone all the time. |

Generally, yes.
If its a class I have a good relationship with, or they're a bit older, I would explain the cultural differences of sexes giving compliments to equal or opposite sex.
But like other posters have said, its a platitude, so I find the return a compliment with a compliment works best. |

That's because there are only two types of food and beverage in Korea - 'delicious' and 'not delicious'.
Just like there are only three types of people - 'handsome/pretty', 'ugly/fat', and 'dont exist'. |

| One thing about being back in Canada. Nobody really points out or even seems to notice 20 pounds overweight on a middle aged man. That just seems about average, not that all the Asian men over 40 are thin either. A lot more are I suppose. |

I gained weight when I first got here, then lost it. I had gained again over the past year and am now going back down. Difference several years ago was the Koreans wouldn't shut up about telling me how fat I was (which I really wasn't considering how many obese guys I knew back home). Nowadays, they don't say a damn word as a lot more Koreans have gotten fatter too.
I suppose it helps that I find better fitting clothes than when I first got here. The clothes, even the western brands, were all made too small and they'd put spandex material in it. Made me look worse at the time then I was. Some really chubby Korean guys look awful when they wear that Korean size large (American size extra small) pink Ralph Lauren Polo shirt that clings to every ounce of fat and hides nothing. (A Korean chick complained to me about one of her friends boyfriends who was quite fat and shaking his rolls through the pink shirt at the noreabang. Ha ha.)
But, I digress. Companies now ship to Korea and I buy normal fitting clothes. No problems. Got stares and smiles last summer from women while visiting Canada and get them here too (small belly aside). |
