Last night my wife and I went to one of the beaches in Incheon. We got a room at a 민박 where we have stayed before. The room was ground level and one room over was a group of young korean men in their early twenties who I believe were soldiers taking a weekend off. We drank a little and ended up going to sleep earliesh. The boys next door drank way to much of course.
At around 4 am there is a blood curddleing scream from my wife. I wake up and there is a man standing in our room just watching us sleep. She woke up and he was just there! Obviously this scares the hell out of us. I jump up and turn on the light and recognize him as one of the young men from next door. He had climbed in our rooms tiny window for some reason.
Im obviously pissed and I grab the guy by his collar and throw him into a corner and hold him there. He kept saying "I am sorry" over and over in English. His friends are still outside drinking and they hear the noise and gather outside of our room probably wondering wtf was going on.
I was holding him in the corner with my forearm across his throat while she checked to make sure nothing was missing. I could have beat the crap out of the guy and it would have been completely justified (even my wife agreed on that one). We could have called the police and bad him arrested. But, in the end I opened the door and tossed him out to his pals outside.
A few minutes later there is a knock on the door. The guy came back to say "I am so sorry" one more time.
Now its a day later and to use some eslcafe terminology, I feel like I acted totally "beta". So what would you have done? Keep in mind how startling it is to wake up and there be a stranger literally looming over your bed. |

Honestly, I would have beat him. A strange man standing over my family while i slept... yeah, that'd drive my defenses into overtime. |

Yes it was wrong of him to do that. Yes, I would have done the same as Capt. and OP. Yes I'll get flamed for saying this: I don't think by the way you describe him that he was a threat. Stupid curious drunk kid. Probably hasn't ever even had a real gfriend yet. Chalk it up to experience and get over the anger, it'll only eat away at you. Next time, get a more expensive place for your girl ya cheap bastard. |

I suspect he may have gotten the windows mixed up and thought he was climbing into his own room. Either that or what you said. He seemed completely terrified. He definitly did not seem threatening (except for the fact that he was in our room). We are laughing about it now but last night it was scary |

If the guy was just standing there I don't see why you think you acted "beta." Beating up someone who is clearly no threat is pretty barbaric. |

Thanks. I also think violence is usually not neccesary.
He wasnt "just standing there" though. He had broken into our room and was standing in the corner in the dark. It was very creepy. |

No. This guy deserved a moderate A-whoopin at the very least if for no other reason to teach him a lesson. Next time he might not get off so easy. |

He said 'sorry' after he was caught - WTF was he doing BEFORE he was caught? How long was he standing there for? What were his intentions??
Honestly, if this happened to me, I wouldn't give it a second thought - he'd be taken out right quick. NOT because of some Alpha/Beta BS, but because I'd seriously be concerned for my family's safety.
Finding an uninvited stranger in my home at night is a very scary prospect. |

I am hoping he realized he wasnt in his room and stood there all panicked and wondering how to remove himself from this ridiculous situation he was in. Or.. he was being some sort of schizo pervert nutbar..
I am surprised I kept my cool. Normally back home I am sure I would have clocked him and then called the police. I didnt do that because of an incident a few years back where I helped someone who had been involved in an assault and ended up spending hours and hours at the police station just to give a statement. Then I got summonsed to court to testify as a witness.. it was a giant hassle and the cops were clearly lookng for any reason to blame the foreigners involved. The victim of the assault had to go to court several times.
I think its better to just de-escalate in Korea. |

All depends on his demeanor and everything.
Stumbling into your room, seeing you and being just as shocked as you are, or passed out thinking he's in his own place- Drunken mistake. Standing over your bed and staring at you while breathing heavily, yeah I'm with the Cap'N on this one.
If the guy was really drunk and honestly confused he'd probably be holding a beer can and tossing his stuff in the corner while he tried to find the pisser and as soon as your wife screamed he'd be saying sorry as fast as he could or running out of there just as freaked out as you guys are. The fact that he's just standing calmly there as your wife screams, yeah, time to go into reflex mode and take the guy out first and ask questions later. |

I have had 2 completely wasted strangers walk into my house in Korea. One old woman, one drunk "business man". Both of them had no idea where they even were. It was such a shock to me both times, but luckily I was awake watching TV. |

He deserved an ass beating but it's also not worth you going to jail over if he was just standing there. Now if his pants were down. |

Going to jail is what went through my head when I was in a similar situation.. A guy jumped into my car and landed on my wife. I got him pinned on the sidewalk and my fist raised, but a crowd had gathered and I came to my senses. Ended up he was loony.. we filed a report, police released him to his family, and that was that. Cop said it was a very good thing I didn't 'go too far'. |

Yeah, he'd get a great lesson in how to extort blood money. |

I don't know. Hard to say in hindsight. Maybe he was just really drunk and mixed up the rooms. In the end no one got hurt, nothing was stolen...sure it was probably pretty scary at the time but the fact that you can laugh at it now shows you probably handled it ok.
I'm sure his buddies are giving him crap over. If you had decided to press charges or whatever it would just be a hassle for you anyways. |
