I am trying to decide where to go for about 6 weeks in July and August.

I'd like to go somewhere that is cheap, has good food, snorkeling, outdoor activities, nature, relaxation, and decent weather. I'd rather read a book than visit a nightclub. I'd also like go somewhere new, if possible. I've been to Thailand, Cambodia, Bali and Flores, and Srilanka already.

I've seen some really nice pictures from the Philippines (Palawan?), but I read that it's typhoon/ rainy season. Is it that bad across the county? I was in Borneo during their rainy season and I didn't like being constantly damp, so I've always gone to dry places.
I am also considering the Perenthians and Malaysia's east coast. How similar is it to Penang or Langkawi? I wasn't a huge fan of either.

I feel like I'm missing out on a lot of south Asia, so any advice would be appreciated.

I hear Malaysian beaches are nice but Kota Kinabalu was HORRIBLE when I went there in 2008 (and others who've been there say it sucked, too). I haven't been to Penang but well, I've heard from others that Malaysia doesn't have that fun vibe you get in other parts of Southeast Asia.

I go the Phils a lot, and am trying to get away from Boracay, which is showing signs of decline. I suggest Pagudpud, which is like 1.5 hours from Laoag, which is an hour flight from Manila. You also have Dumaguete, a university town that was just voted one of the world's cheapest places to retire (lots of Koreans and Iranians there learning English, but I digress). El Nido is also quite nice but it's tough to get there if you don't feel like paying $300 for a chartered plane ride.

I hear much of Indonesia outside of Bali is quite nice and not so touristy or expensive.

People will tell you go south in the Philippines this time of year, but the weather is so unpredictable now (e.g., Yolanda). For example, last summer (2013) the weather in Davao was sunny every day for the 10 weeks I was there. On the other hand, this last December and January, typically the dry season, the weather was overcast and raining everyday throughout the country. It's a bit of a crap shoot, but in my 25 years of going to the Philippines the farther south you go typically the better the weather you will find this time of year.
