I'm unsure if this is the correct section of the forum to post this, but given that it's South Korea, I thought I couldn't be too far off.
Anyways...
I applied for a job through VOU agency, and after interviewing with the school and getting the job, I accepted. Fast forward a week and a half later, and I changed my mind. I let my recruiter know as soon as I realized the job wouldn't work for me in the long-run, since it wasn't in Seoul (the only city I'm interested in).
The school wanted me to begin working the first week of September, then changed the date to the last week of August 2014. That's when it hit me that it'd be stupid to get there to probably end up quitting in a few months.
Well, she wasn't understanding, and I guess I can't fully blame her. Still, her reaction to insult me was completely unwarranted, and more so to then tell me her boss was going to speak with immigration and spread my name so that I couldn't get into South Korea.
Originally she said he was going to take (a fake, signed--I never signed anything) contract, but after speaking with him he said he was "only" going to taint my name "and there was nothing I could do about it." *Cue the evil genius laughter*
I spoke with a few people, none of who are lawyers, and they all said he was just bullying me and that there's nothing he can do without a contract, or with one, for that matter. Things come up in people's lives and sometimes cancelling a contract last minute happens. If every recruiter complained to immigration, they'd be backed-up with complaints. Right? Well, I'm still a bit uneasy. Should I call immigration? Who would I speak to? Should I be worried about this, or let it go as it's just an angry bully making threats? Help!
tl;dr
My recruiter and her boss said they'd go to immigration in South Korea to let them know I cancelled a contract "last minute." I never signed anything. Should I be worried? If so, what should be my next step? |

Blowing smoke in the wind. You signed nothing there is nothing they can do except make it look as if you have broken a contract, which you did not if you never signed anything in the first place. What are they going to do, go to immigration to berate and blackball someone who isn't even registered as a foreign worker in the country with no visa, etc. From personal experience, immigration would ROTFLTAO at some dimwit recruiter coming in to complain about someone who isn't even registered with immigration. The only way you would be registered with immigration would be if you had a work visa, i.e. they have to go to immigration initially and arrange for the work visa FIRST, then once you have it in hand they go back again and register you as a foreign worker in the country. This is like a two or three trip process, and they are not going to waste their precious coffee drinking time on someone who decided to go a different direction.
Don't worry, chalk it up to experience and have nothing to do with low life recruiters like this agency again. Good luck on finding your position and I hope all works out for you. Cheers! |

A recruiter just lost a commission and needs to find a replacement for you ASAP. Their threats are nothing more than pissing in the wind.
There is NOTHING they can do other than ensure they don't work with you again.
There is nothing you can do except to move on to another 20 recruiters and start again.

Thank you so much for the reassuring comments. I feel a lot better.
I looked the recruiter up via a simple Google search and this isn't the first time she's tried to screw people over. Considering this isn't my first time going abroad, I should know better than to skip researching the company, but she seemed so friendly/helpful...! |

Forging your signature on the contract would be illegal and immigration wouldn't accept a contract anyway without your other documents. |

I would love to post the actual name of the recruiter because she screwed me over big time.
She told me to use a a company called Biometrics for my CBC, and now other recruiting companies are telling me immigration won't accept it.
I actually asked the VOU lady if that company was legit since it seemed too good to be true, but she said she'd used it before with other teachers. Then I learned a new vocab word: channeler, and apparently South Korea doesn't accept CBCs from channelers.
So I spent $80 on the CBC and $45 on an company that personally delivers it, all to be told that that paper is useless.
And I'm supposed to be starting a new job in seven weeks... |

Have you tried?
So long as your background check is issued, stamped and apostilled by the applicable government agency then it shouldn't matter if it reaches you via a "channeller" or a racing pigeon.
I wouldn't trust anything a recruiter tells you. They make it up as they go along. |

I haven't, but I will take everything to the SK consulate on Monday and see what happens.
Part of me wants to trust the CBC is valid since it was apostilled, but also because at the time the recruiter told me to go through Biometrics, I still hadn't turned down the job. It would've been worse for them had my papers been declined two-three weeks later.
I had a bad experience with my recruiter/company when I taught in Turkey, but really, when you're not in the country, it seems almost impossible to find employment without a recruiter. |
