Wednesday, September 10 looks like a red day on my calander. The hagwon I work at has just informed us classes will go on as usual. Everyone is angry about this as we all assumed we had it off. Anyone in the same boat? |

tell them to call up the labour board and confirm how much extra they have to pay you to have you work on a red day. you'll either get extra pay or the day off. |

It is techinically a "red" day, but the government, in their infinite wisdom, has made it optional for everyone except government workers and banks. However, if your contract states that you are supposed to have national holidays off, then you should have the day off. |

My calendar at work (and at home in fact) doesn't have Wednesday as red. Therefore, I'm working (in fashion - were watching movies all day). |

It's a holiday for government and public institutions. It is an 'optional' holiday for other industries and businesses. The hagwons are within their legal rights to schedule it as a work day if they choose. Doesn't make it right, but the government decided to simply make it optional for all but public institutions and government entities. that was the negotiation that was worked out last November when they passed the legislation.
Hagwons in some cases are using it to skirt around giving employees off anymore time than they have to for the purpose of making the money. I feel for most people who are under the direction of people who worry more about money than the other tangible things connected to the job, IMHO. |

If it makes hagwon folks feel any better, the folks at the Korean branch of my company have to work on Wednesday. Sales, marketing, factory workers, etc. |

I'm off on Wednesday. It's nice to have yet another day off, but I imagine I'll have cabin fever by Thursday and be raring to go teach. No matter how it's sliced, we'll have a short work week next week. |

Public Sector Employees + Banks = Off
Everyone else = Optional and at the discretion of the employer. |

This is a very simplistic and naive opinion. Think hard and try again. |
