I've been to Italy, and I was slightly disappointed by the food. Not that it was bad in any way, but rather it was no different to the food I have eaten in Italian restaurants in the UK and even here in Korea. I think I had high expectations because of the hype surrounding it, and when I got there it was nothing new. |

Sorry but adults drinking milk is akin to grown men wearing shorts to work, chewing bubble gum, drinking from a straw while at a table, sugary cereals, playing checkers or tic-tac-toe, bringing a mitt to a baseball game, sandals away from the beach, not wearing a belt, using a pencil instead of a pen for office work, chewing a pencil, drinking rum and cokes over whiskey (unlesd for concealment purposes), and popsicles (unless dunked in beer). Theres just certain things a grown man moves past and certainly doesnt enjoy in public. |
What can I say? If I were in a real hurry to grow up I wouldn't be teaching ESL. |

Plenty of lamb skewer restaurants spread out across Seoul that have more authentic offerings. There are also proper Chinese enclaves in places like Guro where I imagine you can get the full-on stuff.
................................you got me there.
But I don't think the point is how diverse the offerings are here. It's more that most people eat pretty awful renditions of the local dishes while they're here and proceed to proclaim the nation's food as terrible. Most places serve slop, so I understand where the sentiment comes from. But there are some places that serve quality Korean food that make it really hard to go back to the slop once you've had a chance to try them. |
There are six Din Tai Fung's in Seoul, meaning half the country has one within 45 minutes of them. No complaining. |

I don't think so. I've been to some amazing Italian restaurants in Toronto (actually Etobicoke if you can believe it), and I'm sure there are great Italian restaurants in probably every US city, and in London; maybe Tokyo.
If you look at Michelin Star restaurants, Korea has none. I think that says something, although I'm sure someone here will claim that it doesn't.

That list is basically Europe, the U.S., Japan, and Hong Kong. So I guess by your reasoning, those are the only places to get decent food? |

Isn't there like a mini Chinatown in Incheon? I swear I was there once about 8 years ago and the place was littered with (meaning, at least 3) authentic Chinese restaurants. |

Daerim station has some authentic Chinese restaurants. At least it seems authentic. I only ever see Chinese people in there and the dishes are pretty funky tasting. |

How dare you question The Shockmaster!
Seriously though, look for the Shockmaster video- quite possibly the greatest video at summing up everything ridiculous about professional wrestling.
Also, that's a stormtrooper helmet covered in glitter.
EDIT- NM, here's the vid for you (note this wasn't faked)

I noticed the milk when I first arrived as well ..... The primary value of Korean cuisine is the side dishes ... |

Is that good funk or bad funk? Are we talking James Brown or Jamiroquai? |

There is a Chinatown in Incheon but I haven't had the fortune of encountering any authentic Chinese restaurants there.

It's a fair point. I wonder what the story is there. Knowing how big Korea is on promoting itself culturally and gastronomically, I'm curious if some group here has tried to appeal to the Michelin Star folks to check out places here, but the restaurants failed, or if it's overlooked, or if it's location bias, or whatever.
I would posit that the atmosphere would keep a lot of the places serving good stuff out of the running. The places that nail their signature dish tend not to have that "sophisticated" ambiance.
edit: Quick Google search, this quote is a bit telling, take from it what you will:
Quote: |
Jung Sik Dang
Some fans of Korean food may swear by grilled pork in a smoky, cramped restaurant, and while samgyeopsal is undeniably tasty, sometimes it's nice to enjoy a meal without donning a bib to keep off the grease splatters.
Jung Sik Dang is undeniably upscale, in both price and ambiance, but offers good value despite the disproportionately large plates. The Manhattan location just earned its second Michelin star.
And, unlike traditional Korean course meals (hanjeongsik), Jung Sik Dang dishes feature interesting culinary juxtapositions like foie gras with chicken, sea urchin in a bibimbap or anchovies in a paella.
A lunch set is a good way to sample a variety of dishes, and will set you back ₩44,000 ($41). |
