Is it really that difficult for a British male teacher to find a job in Korea?

I'm looking for a job in Busan but nearly all recruiters say schools won't even look at my resume or even consider interviewing me because they are looking to hire a North American teacher, preferably female.

This is my first time teaching job and I've been looking for work since May.

I wonder if Scotland secedes from the UK will Scots still be eligible to teach in Korea? You have to have a passport from one of the seven listed countries. "Scotland" is not one of them.

Will Scots be allowed to keep their UK passports? If not...

Jodie - it's becoming increasingly difficult to get a job in Korea if you lack experience. An easier route may be to apply for some jobs in China. Although the track is less beaten, there is a lot of money to be made in China.

I know tons of British teachers here....the majority of the teachers at my school were British males up until this semester.

No-one will be deported. People in Scotland can retain their UK passports, plus it's almost 2 years before Scottish independence would come into effect.

I have always found that being British was one of my selling points in Korea.

I came in on GEPIK and then after that contract found work in country.

Just keep plugging away and try to be as flexible as possible in terms of your desired location, you will eventually find something.

The date for independence is not until March 2016 and it is very likely that their EU accession will take until at least 2018/20, so they might delay that March date by another few years.

In any case Scots will have a choice and I am sure dual nationality would be an option for those who do not want to lose the benefits of a British passport.

Nowadays, yes.

There are still a fair number of british guys in Korea but we mostly got our jobs and contacts sorted years ago.

Not true. The number of Brits in Korea is increasing.

I see many Brits, even some Irish and Scots. They are not particularly good looking but in their 20's or early 30's, I guess. How old are you? You aren't colored, are you?

The love of American English here is often tempered by anti-American attitudes. Maybe try widening your search to places other than Busan, and perhaps inject a transatlantic touch to your accent when interviewing.

He is right.

The number of British E2 visa holders has always remained quite steady, but since 2008 there has been a definite increase.

I work with a guy from England; therefore, it's true that Brits are being hired. He told me it wasn't difficult; therefore, it's easy to get hired as a Brit.

All Brits are not the same, but if you speak with RP or BBC English accent and if you're a young decent-looking Caucasian male, you have as good chance to land a job in Korea as Americans.
