|
|
Hi all! I am currently completing my EPIK application to start work in Korea in February 2015 and I am trying to decide which city/province to place as my preference for where to live and work. Any insight and/or suggestions? I am interested in living in a city but trying to avoid the major metropolitan areas in order to receive a little bit higher pay. I prefer warmer weather and was thinking about the southern part of the country around Busan...any thoughts on Changwon or Ulsan? Thanks!! |

Sorry to pop your bubble, but all regions on the peninsula have all four seasons, and there's not much of a temp difference in any of them. Even Jeju Island has winter! |

As posted....temps are pretty much the same throughout the country; humid summers, sticky, etc.. winters...some are more colder than others..but it gets COLD! Jeju? Not long winters, but cold none the less.
No matter where you live in korea...transportation is abundant and you can easily travel to other cities on your days off. No matter what place you end up in...do your time....I mean...do your year and during that time, network, make connections, learn the language and try another city the following year.
One think about korea..you see one town and you've seen them all.
If you don't want a big city...forget seoul, busan, dague, etc...
If you want to be along the ocean...may choices as well. |

Remember "Cohiba's Rule" (Now better than ever!):
Think twice before you live outside of Seoul. "In Seoul" and
"outside of Seoul" are like two different countries. Seoul
is an interesting place with variety and venues for most
tastes. Outside of Seoul you will find a homogeneous Korean
culture. I don't mean this in a bad way, but you will never
find things like: French, Greek, Indian or any other ethnic
foods. Markets that sell sherry, pate, pastrami, ricotta cheese.
Specialty shops that sell cuban cigars, European pies, cold
cuts or rye breads. Just to name a few things.
The FFF RULE: FFF=Fun For Foreigners.
If FFF in Seoul = 100, then FFF decreases at
1/distance. So 2km from Seoul FFF=1/2(100)=50;
10km from Seoul FFF=1/10(100)=10. This rule is
a rule for nightlife, food and foreign products only.
Nature etc. is on a different scale altogether.
This means you will be wasting a lot of time commuting
to Seoul. This is especially a drag if you have been
boozing on a Friday night and there are no buses or
trains. |

Cohibas rule is so dumb, applicable in 1995 maybe. I was just in Daegu last weekend, thats a jumping town. Seoul, meh. Its ok, but nowadays, most of the services are the same in all the cities. Busan is my fave. Now Im in GyeongI. Not great, but it has all the basic boxes ticked. |

Totally depends on your definition of 'most'. I will agree that more are available every year, but 'most' is a stretch. |

Totally depends on your definition of 'most'. This is the point that he was trying to make when he said you can sue and see the details on that page. I might add a few more points. I may also add the definition of 'most' varies from dictionary to dictionary, for some people it means more than 50% and for someone people it means really close to 100% but not quite. I will agree that more are available every year, but 'most' is a stretch. |
Any know of any areas where cost of apartments are affordable and also that are decent?

If you're planning on teaching this generally won't really matter to you. |

Seoul real estate proses are looped. Head down to Pusan and you're probably paying half what you'd be paying in Seoul. Other cities? Even cheaper. |
