Koreans look at me strangely when they see me out collecting cardboard, some of them make nasty comments.
I always tell them, put a shiny (plastic coated) *think* fruit box, on top of the normal brown cardboard to keep it dry when you stack it.
This revelation normally makes them pause, take a step back and make them realize what they've been doing wrong all those years.
You can't argue with such wisdom.

They actually wet the cardboard to make it weigh more. |

Sorry, i didn't really make it clear why I posted that. What I meant was that the idea that Korea has a good education system is debatable both in terms of global rankings of universities, and also more pertinent to this thread, the methods of education that cause young minds to reach near breaking point. Sadly, in many cases the pressure is too much and children have killed themselves because of their educational performance. |
I'm not sure how much the suicide rate can be linked to the educational system. For starters it would seem its not the educational system that causes them to commit suicide, but rather family expectations or unreasonable expectations of self. Societal scorn of mental illness and a reluctance to seek professional counseling may also be a factor.
Without correcting for those factors and verifying that it is indeed specifically the way in which students are taught, it is tough cite the school system.
Lithuania has one of the highest suicide rates but its education system is not regarded as being so rigorous. Finland also has a high suicide rate, but its educational system is looked at as a model for excellent results and a good "environment". |

OMFG, Atwood is actually getting funny. I think I pushed him too far, and environmental pressures caused his humor gene to mutate into something new, and surprisingly enjoyable. |

Really? There might not be a lot of available data on suicides, but the average high school student here is under a lot more stress than the average western student. |

There is available data on suicides. For young people up to age 24, Korea and USA both have a rate about 13 per 100,000. |

Right on! They shouldn't be killing themselves. Do it like in USA and kill each other! where the murder rate is WAY higher. Thats how you know your country and culture are not "seriously wrong", hey? |

Why change anything? The suicide rate should be higher if anything. Whatever makes this overcrowded country more livable. |

The apologist answers seem to illustrate what many Koreans think about English instructors: They are unwilling and/or unable to find meaningful employment back in their home countries, and so it would cause cognitive dissonance to admit the serious and fundamental problems all around them in Korea. To avoid the inconsistency that would result from fully recognizing/acknowledging the flaws, while choosing to voluntarily live and work in such a problematic environment, they fervently defend their adopted homeland from its every critic.
One could venture to guess that the less the prospects for meaningful employment in their home countries, the more fervent the apologist defends his adopted home and turns a blind eye to its flaws. |

Man, you need a break. Or get laid. Anything to get you away from this weird hobby of yours. Korea has its problems, but what's the point in shoving it people's faces all the time? Seriously, give it a break - for your own sake. |

Exactly. At least Koreans have some honor, and decency toward others.
It's like how bums in the US take out their anger on everyone walking by, while bums in KR sit quietly with their heads bowed and allow you to give money if you feel like it. After all, their problems do not give them the right to take it out on innocent people.
When Koreans know they are done, they just exit with grace, not murder a room full of people. |
