In this case nothing is lost, and possibly something is gained. Better safe than sorry.

Perhaps! There is zero chance I would ever agree to a job in airport screening or ebola medical care. Let someone else die for American stupidity.

Korean Air stopped flights to/from Africa way back in August. Common sense.

Africa is a big place. Stopping flights to Kenya because of Ebola in Liberia is akin to stopping flights to Seoul because of something going on in Mumbai, and spanks of black panic. As I've said, I'm not opposed to travel bans being utilized to stop the spread of the virus, but be smart about it.

Korea may have little to offer Africa in the way of aid or expertise, so their flight bans are likely do little damage.

If the West were to impose flight bans, that would prevent doctors and ebola specialists from coming back and forth to treat the disease, the disease would spread further in Africa, and eventually it might make its way to other countries and from there back to the United States anyway.

Agreed, which is why blanket travel bans are not a good idea. That said, it's theoretically possible to put in place a travel ban that would allow waivers for medical personnel, thus allowing the affected countries to get the help they need while proceeding as cautiously as possible. I'd like to see all options on the table, without concern for appearances or politics, though I don't expect that to happen.

Why do seemingly intelligent people put forward such stupid positions? It is perfectly possible to have a ban on most flights coming from West Africa while allowing medical specialists to fly back and forth with proper screening and quarantine procedures, for example, by using military aircraft and specially designated airports.

And its perfectly possible to enact screening procedures and quarantine procedures without sealing off those who are healthy in these countries from the world.

Nice attempt to skirt the ad hominem, though.

.

Why take the risk of the disease spreading, especially since such 'screening procedures' may not identify people who have contracted the virus but are not yet exhibiting any obvious symptoms?

Won't work. Too complex, and people aren't smart enough to follow even simple procedures. There will be errors, it will fail. The ocean is a natural barricade, hold it on that side of the ocean.

Stopping flights to all of Africa just indicates racism and dumb-ness.

"Africa" is not a country but a continent made up of 53 nations, most of them about 10 times the size of south korea with about 100X more diversity in terms of language and ethnicity.

A comment from an NYT ebola article:

My sister is an MD at a major North Carolina hospital. One of her MD colleagues who works in the ER just returned from a volunteer assignment in Liberia and immediately went back to work--in the ER. The rest of the medical staff can't believe CDC did not require this MD to quarantine himself and get cleared before returning to work

I'm sure those in charge have everything under control.

Some cool heads here: http://dish.andrewsullivan.com/2014/10/14/close-the-borders-to-ebola/.

Some snippets:

Rod Dreher:

Quote:
Apparently — according to some liberal readers of this blog — Limbaugh and the usual suspects are working Ebola fears into political talking points. It is therefore required of all decent and right-thinking people to take the opposite position. So I’ve learned.

Megan McArdle:

Quote:
You can still argue, of course, that such bans are inhumane and costly. But at least from the evidence we have, closing the borders does seem possible, so we should probably stop insisting that it isn’t.

A second Texas health care worker has been diagnosed, and she had flown from Cleveland to Dallas the night before her diagnoses: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-29632433.

Quote:
US health officials are seeking 132 people who flew on a plane with a Texas nurse on the day before she came down with symptoms of Ebola.

The nurse, the second person to catch Ebola in the US, fell ill on Tuesday.

Both she and nurse Nina Pham, 26, had treated Liberian Thomas Eric Duncan, who died on 8 October, in Dallas.

Meanwhile, the UN's Ebola mission chief says the world is falling behind in the race to contain the virus, which has killed more than 4,000 in West Africa.

On Wednesday, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said it wanted to interview the people who flew on Frontier Airlines flight 1143 from Cleveland, Ohio, to Dallas, Texas on 13 October.

It said it was taking the measure "because of the proximity in time between the evening flight and first report of illness the following morning".
