|

On my last two trips to Yongsan the guy that hangs out at the end of the tunnel flogging pirated software wasn't there......and his competition wasn't either. Did they get busted, move the operation elsewhere, or was it just coincidence that they weren't there? |

Last time I saw him he was hanging out in the middle.
I talked with a few legit guys there and they said MS had guys constantly showing up and checking for pirate goods. They were terrified!!! It was really wierd. They were talking about these guys (undercover) like they were mob bosses. A few of them told me that a couple guys who sold some illegal SW had their stores closed and were put in jail.

As of last week, they were still there. They're usually there on Saturdays for sure, less on weekdays. |

As far as I've been told by vendors, all the busts happen on the weekends... thats when everyone is really careful to who they sell....
go on a weekday and you'll have more luck |

I bought a dodgy CD on Saturday with no problems. I love the whole cloak and dagger business when you buy something from those guys. |

When I visited Taiwan it was interesting to see just how much pirated stuff I could buy. I mean, t-shirts, cds, Video Cds, Dvds and toys. Around Gumi, if you look around the high schools and middle schools you'll find some vendors selling pirated tapes and cds and the occasional Dvd. This doesn't bother me, in fact I think the only way to make a dent in the big 5 media conglomerates that control the world is to pirate their swag. More power to those who profit from it. Take them down, one brick at a time. In this case, one movie, one game and one cd at a time. |

There seems to be a contradiction here.
Have you tried downloading that which you seek? That is how the guy gets a lot of his stuff, then he puts it on a disk and charges you for it. |

Try living in China.
The hard thing there is finding something that is not counterfeit.
It's gotten so bad that last month over a hundred children died from eating fake baby formula.
Counterfeit goods are not all fun and games. |

I don't like downloading executable files, there's something not right about getting a dodgy file and then willingly installing it onto your PC. For some reason, buying certain things on CD from a dodgy guy in an underpass makes me feel happier about the whole business. |

Yeah, because then you can blame somebody besides yourself if your system gets screwed up.
(Of course, it's still your fault for using illicit software - but whatever makes you feel happier...) |
