|
|
My tourist visa for Thailand expired dec 25th. I was very sick
and not up for making the trip to vientaine Laos for my visa run
this week. I'm feeling better and my understanding is that I pay
a 500 baht a day fine (which I'm ok with). I'm scared though
about being denied re entry/a new tourist visa,
especially since I have personal
belongings and I'm renting a place in northern Thailand.
I'm a few days over and my first visa run so I think I'm ok,
But please be honest: should I worry?
I'm also thinking of taking the bus instead of flying since
I figure that they are less likely to look at my passport
at the bus station than at the airport.
Thanks in advance. |

Flying or taking the bus won't make a difference. I've paid overstay fines at both the land crossings and airport over the year. The airport has a booth you just go and pay at before you check-in. Easy. Just make sure no police need to see your passport before you get to immigration. They are supposed to take you in if they catch you out and about on an overstayed visa. |

Taking a bus is an extremely bad idea! I guarantee they'll look at your passport at one of the police check points on the way. The police will see your expired entry stamp/visa and pull you off of the bus and arrested you are. If you fly, when you go through immigration on the way to the airplane, the officer writes you up a ticket, you pay and off you go. It takes an extra 5 minutes. It does not affect your ability to get another visa. I don't think there are any records of it. Don't stay illegally too long because when it hits two weeks you have to go to court. |

Under current rules, if you are caught and arrested by police (prior to dealing with immigration) you will also be banned from re-entry for up to 1 year.
If you overstay by more than 90 days you will be barred from re-entry as well. (longer overstays will result in longer bans).
