Shin Eun-Mi To Be Deported From South Korea For Praising North Korea

"SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A Korean-American woman accused of praising rival North Korea in a recent lecture said she is being deported Saturday from South Korea, in the latest in a series of cases that critics say infringe on the country's freedom of speech.
The Korea Immigration Service decided to deport Shin Eun-mi, a California resident, after prosecutors determined that her comments violated South Korea's National Security Law, agency official Kim Du-yeol said.
Shin said she will be taking a flight out of South Korea on Saturday evening, but hopes to be able to return to both Koreas." |

I missed this the first time I read the article....
"In December, a high school student threw a homemade explosive device toward a podium where Sin was speaking, injuring two people. Shin was unhurt. The student was sent to a juvenile detention center and is awaiting trial."

I don't know if I would go so far as to call her stupid. If she was purposely trying to test the limits of free speech, some would be calling her brave, even if she was making Pro-Nork statements. The thing is, I am not so sure that is what she was trying to do, so yeah, maybe she was a little naive about how touchy some groups get and the consequences of ticking them off.. But hell, her book on her trips were even included in a government-designated reading list in 2013, so wtf.....

| I think the law is draconian as it tramples on basic freedom of speech rights. However, it is their country. Shin Eun-mi is not a citizen. She can go back to her comfortable lifestyle in the US and romanticize the North all she wants. |

Hey I agree 100% with the "their country" part. Still, even as an outsider it's interesting to see the political debate play out within the country between the Libs and the Cons.

That was a protest song written by South Korean singer and activist Yoon Min-suk. It "was the unofficial theme song of the anti-US hatefest of 2002".
Although I did find that interesting, what connection does it have to the current story on Shin Eun-Mi? |

Pretty big stretch to compare the two. Yoon Min-suk is not only Pro-Korean and pro-unification, she is also virulently anti-American. Shin Eun-Mi is an American citizen, and not so much pro North - she's just not as anti as some would like. She also thinks the north's beer tastes better, but you can't fault her for saying that!  |

Personally I think the US should be deporting political undesirables too. Anybody sympathizing with North Korea is nuts. Being deported is no big deal anyway. Actually they could start with the Islamists in my opinion even if they're citizens. |

I kind of agree, but what would you do with in-country natural-born citizens? Where will you deport them to? Parents country? Which parent? How about a 5th generation white American born in Kansas who decides to go Islamic extremist?
I personally would limit it to naturalized citizens who naturalized after the age of 12. For younger kids, I'd try to figure out why they are turning out the way they are.
You've got to consider these scenarios before making a law. Otherwise lawyers will have a field day tearing the law apart. |
