How would he know if he had the policy from Day 1? If it was in response to a string of incidents, that would be one thing. But it was from the get-go. No cause for this policy. Weapons? Who the heck is packing in Korea? Unless I've somehow magically managed to miss all the fights where people pulled out bats, chains, and knives from their back pants pocket.
As for Korean men not handling competition. Tons and tons of Korean guys go to clubs where there are lots of foreigners. If they were really that concerned, these places would be devoid of Korean guys, but they aren't. There may be a small minority of dudes who have a problem, but it seems the vast, silent majority doesn't give a flying crap. |
Yeah, let's not give this idiot bar owner more credit than he deserves: he's an asshole, and he's using his customers as a smokescreen to somehow justify his assholery. Most Koreans couldn't give a rat's ass as to whether foreigners are allowed in an establishment. |

True, but don't tell the typical angry Dave's poster that. In his eyes, all Korean men fly into fits of rage when a Korean woman walks hand in hand with a white guy.
Sure there are some that don't like it, but you get the exact same thing back home. |

I see no problem here.
A) Koreans open to relationships with foreigners will not go there.
B) Koreans that might be hostile to foreigners will go there.
C) I have no need to go there
Seems like it winnows out some problems & the focus of our efforts can be diverted more profitably elsewhere. |

Yeah and I don't see any problem with bars that ban black people either.
A) Koreans open to drinking in the same place as black people will not go there
B) Koreans that might be hostile to black people will go there
C) I have no need to go there

If there were bars with 'no Koreans allowed' signs in any major city in the world such as London, New York, Toronto, Melbourne etc, there would be a major backlash and scandal.

A sauna employee refused to admit to the woman, a naturalized Korean, saying she was still a “foreigner” by appearance and foreign users may “make water in bathtub dirty” ...
Such an action was possible because there is no law on discrimination by race, according to a support center for immigrants.
“Many foreigners face such discrimination often but mostly they remain silent because they don’t speak Korean well and don’t know where they can appeal,” said Ku Su-jin

The "exact" same thing back home? Right.
And where are the bars banning foreigners back home? (Other than the Korean clubs that break the law by banning non-Korean locals)
It's clear you don't go out much to bars or clubs, or if you do, you aren't really talking to local women much. Depending on the circumstances, some locals really do fly into fits of rage, but it usually comes out in passive aggressive ways (mean stares, K-ock blocking, etc.) Yeah many don't care that foreigners enter, but plenty do or there wouldn't be bans at all. |

Far from being devoid of them, they tend to start flooding a place any time there is a scene with a mix of foreigners and friendly girls, changing demographics for the worse (not to mention the vibe).
But yeah they can handle the competition: they have an advantage in language, numbers, and most club chicks aren't looking for casual Joe Blow ESL anyway. Foreigners/English teachers have been negatively branded here by the media, whether they deserved it or not.

The vast majority probably don't care that foreigners are banned either though, plenty are likely completely comfortable with it and see nothing wrong with it. Stand outside and look around at the crowd after you are denied entry and you'll see what I mean, they don't give a crap, that's true. Oh wait, as a gyopo, they'll let you in anyway. Never mind. |

Ill agree with you on the first part. Thats true too.
As for being a gyopo. Maybe, but if you cant really speak Korean theyre just as likely to think youre Chinese or Japanese and give you grief along those lines as well. Although that may be in the form of entrance with inflated cover charges rather than outright banning. But also the 'Korean Only' thing as well. Of course if youre with girls it doesnt matter.
Sadly the only time normal bystanders would give a crap about 'No Foreigners' is if you were rolling with 4 blonde girls. Then those guys would be up in arms about the policy.  Korean guys might not be freaking out about foreign men as much as we think they do, but that doesnt mean there isnt a double standard.
I know this isnt quite my usual apologist line but the complaint about the policy is not without merit. |
