I'd argue that Korea is a pretty good deal for the majority of recent grads, but becomes less and less of a good deal the longer you stay. The pay looks weak on paper, but when you factor in the tax rate and the fact that an apartment is included, your standard newb job still results in take home pay that is more or less equivalent to $40,000+ a year, and you don't need a car in Korea which results in significant savings. Unless you went to a particularly good school and majored in something particularly marketable, this is probably better than you're going to get right after graduating. The problem is that once that new grad leaves Korea they're probably going to have to compete for those entry level positions paying sub-$40,000 with all the recent grads.

Therein sums up the answer. It's ok for a year or two. But things are more expensive here than one may think. Costs have been rising for years, the pay is stuck in neutral and is about the same as 10 years ago. Also, the exchange rate is down for many countries. You use to be able to make a lot more, costs were cheaper, you were taxed on less things, and the exchange rate was far superior.

This is the exchange as of today for the US dollar.

2,000,000.00 KRW = 1,799.54 USD

2,000,000.00 KRW = 2,271.65 CAD

So, it definately depends on where you are sending money too. It's a decent deal for Canadians. Though hard to say how long this will last. For Americans, it has been declining and going down more all the time.

Long term, it's better to do China or the Middle East.

You claim to be a big timer in Korea so that means you were a big timer in the U.S. as well? Regale us with your tales of bling. ($_$)

I have never claimed to be a big timer, anywhere. I have claimed to work hard and put in a lot of hours. No bling.

That's a bit harsh. I don't think the average Korea expat is "unemployable". They might be below average in the looks department, but that just means employers are biased in favour of physically attractive people.

World Traveler- what's the wifi like on your cruise ship (where you were going to work playing guitar for big coin)? As an ex-busker, I'm curious about that lifestyle. Thanks in advance.

Oh, so now you're an ex-busker looking to become a professional musician? That fits in well with your narrative of dating Kpop stars who hunt African tribesmen for sport, being offered threesomes by random women on the street, winning thousands of dollars in casinos, partying with Hines Ward...and the time you went to jail: http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?p=2916971&highlight=#2916971

Query: Do you have any stories of folks who tried to pass themselves off as something they're not when in Korea?
I liked to claim that I was a filmmaker and had ideas. The fact is I did have some meager plans but of course didn't produce anything.

Definitely. Some people choose to "reinvent" themselves when given the opportunity.

very similar to korean PB. Also similar, i got to 3rd base with the korean cashier in the alley.

COUNTERPOINT: Don't let this lesson deter you guys from all risky decisions. One of my biggest regrets was being singled out by two young ladies on a Seoul side street who said "Two girls, one guy."

I laughed it off, imagining I was about to get fleeced, but in retrospect, it was in a quiet, residential area, fairly early, and didn't stink of hoodwink. Another time, I met a very busty fox at Cheers and cut it off after making out with her in the freezing toilet, thinking we could pick pick it up later and I was being a gentleman. Got a fairly hilarious lashing from her bf the next day when I texted her. Didn't know he existed, and I certainly didn't expect to hear her ranting and raving and crying in the background from an innocent kakao message.

Bottom line: be smart, spare the card, take the 3 some when it's offered.

Good to see you are practicing your creative writing skills. Maybe you can write a screen play about your adventures in Korea. Look out James Frey!

Troll job? What's that? The above poster maitaidads is a troll (a liar who makes up fake stories...which is rather pathetic). I was simply pointing that out.

Do you have anything interesting/pertinent to the topic at hand to say? (Probably not.) You and a couple other posters like to mention my name a lot (rather than make a comment with even a modicum of insight within the discussion). Lame/obnoxious/vapid.

Agreed. But to be honest, 80% of what he posted from me was true. The other 20 was for selfish entertainment value. Please don't be creepy WT and pick through everything I've posted. I really do want to hear about the cruise ship.
On topic, the company I work for is hiring tremendously right now. However, my bff quit his attorney job to relocate to his dream city; with 10 years experience, he's been unemployed for the past 8 months.

Well, I made a point in response to one of your posts above, but you were a bit too frothy at the mouth tracking down maitaidads violations of forum protocol to notice.

See, this is what I'm talking about, man. Someone exposes a fraud and then is called names for it.

If someone is lying (meaning misleading people), it's fair game to call them out on it.

Articles like this are good:
http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/go-ahead-and-call-bill-oreilly-what-he-is-a-pathological-liar-20150305

Other than that, personal attacks are petty. I don't engage in them at all unless someone is doing it first (not just to myself my others) not because my e-feelings are hurt but because I'm trying to get them to go away so they don't keep polluting the board with their vapid stupidity. By writing crap, they are wasting the time of the readers.

Dude, Rule I of using the internet is to not feed the trolls. The internet is middle school, and you're supposed to ignore the bullies, not respond to them. Spending an hour tracking down every one of a poster's inconsistencies doesn't get him to go away, it gets him to come back for more.

Wrong. The opposite is true. Ignoring bullies doesn't work. (They will continue their bad ways if given the chance.) If someone is exposed as a liar and fraud, they will quit telling tall tales because others will no longer believe them (so they won't be able to to get pathetic thrills from misleading people) and/or the mods will eventually step in and ban them (hopefully anyways).

When Canadians go on and on about how the U.S. sucks while I am trying to enjoy my dinner I tell them to their face they are being f*cking rude and explain why. This way they are less likely to bother myself and others in the future. I used to say nothing, but I've had it. Now I'm very direct.

The mods are going to ban someone for embellishment? Assuming the mods here were active (which they aren't), that's not even a TOS violation.
