I... don't see that. |
Nor do I. It's simply not happening.
More apologist nonsense from Schwa.
Having said that, if the old woman was crossing against the light holding up traffic she deserves a slapping. I see this arrogance far too often from old people in Korea. Rules apply to them, too. |
Surprise! People have different views and opinions and how they see what is going on around them.
Stop playing the apologist card because you're too lazy to use your critical thinking skills.
Driving is still bad, but it has gotten much better.
The crosswalk on my way to my old school was a warzone when I started there 4 years ago. It seemed like they would speed up when I tried to cross (no traffic signals) This year, people actually let me cross. The wave for me to go first. It was awesome. |
That's your opinion from YOUR observations. Mine differ. I don't need to name call... but I also recognize that just because you observe something, does not make it so. |

That, sir, if anything, is on the rise. Pretty much worldwide.

One thing that has declined, I believe significantly, is drunk driving. Seems to be a much bigger taboo these days. |
But what about texting while driving, which makes drivers just as distracted as if they were drunK? |

Not addressing you. But I agree. However there seems to be a double standard. My observations are "apologist" related therefore not valid, but Sminthington's are valid right? |

You're probably right on that one. Well, not probably but 99.9% definitely. The .1% is people not texting but gaming or streaming video.
Or even the navigation systems. Those can be distracting as well. I drive like a grandmother and I've had 1 second (I want to believe so) lapses where I was screaming at the navi for sending me the wrong way. |

Smithington's been called out for his "observations" before by just about everyone frequenting this board, disproving your double standard claim. |

Drunk driving increased last year, for the first time in five years. |

LOL at Atwood dissing other people's "observations". In a recent topic of discussion (on the efficacy or otherwise of prayer) he cited as authoritative a book written in the 1890s thereby cavalierly dismissing all scientific observations on the matter made over the past century and more. Also failed to observe that his favorite little book was dissected as early as 1907. Also failed to observe that Wikipedia is not the source of choice for people who want their opinions to be taken seriously. Christ, even his quote above is a rejection of sound observation in favor of hyperbolic attack. Observant he is not. Nor is he particularly bright. When informed that he was dismissing an entire century's research into the matter he responded with "what's the year of publication got to do with anything?" Would he let a doctor operate on him using a medical journal written in 1896? Silly child. |

Complete and utter BS. William James' work is still highly regarded and considered authoritative in its field. That's why it has remained in print for over a century. What has the critic you fail to name done?
I guess they should tear down the Sistine Chapel because it's old. That's real smart.
Smythie, neither bright nor observant (Unless we're talking about cafeteria worker etiquette; on which he's so expert one can only surmise that his last full-time employment was as a busboy.) nor mature, but seriously out there, wherever that may be. |

Ok...before this thread gets locked.
Truck Driver Runs Red Light to Save Old Woman from Certain Death!
or
Old Woman Risks Her Own Life to Save the Lives of Motorists!
http://www.koreabang.com/2015/stories/grandmother-holds-up-traffic-to-cross-road.html
Seriously. Check this video again. Put it on large screen. At the 6 sec mark you can see the light turns green, but the truck is just entering the intersection...obviously running a red light in his direction. He crosses all three lanes and then back again...all three lanes.
Had any driver advanced on time into that light....hello truck!
While some are mentioning that the driving safety has improved...this is a video that demonstrates the exact opposite.
Truly Classic video.

Running red lights, especially from the turn lane, is pretty much to be expected these days. Last one through, which is now often the third or fourth vehicle to run the red, just lays on their horn. Safety third!
And they barely let that woman get across--they're inching toward her the whole time, and all lanes are go before she's on the sidewalk.
Still, she's in the wrong as well. She had to have known she couldn't make it across in time but went anyway. |

You just don't get it. In what field exactly is James' book still considered authoritative? Just because its been in print for over a century doesn't make it authoritative. Mein Kampf is still in print, as is the Koran, the bible, Aesop's Fables and a million other titles no longer considered authoriative. Some things' value does not deteriorate with age, it is true. But that applies almost exclusively to the arts. Poetry, great paintings, and architecture age well. They are timeless, even (in a subjective sense). Science and our understanding of the world emphatically are not. They are improved upon with every passing generation. Even Einstein was wrong about some things; Freud about a great many. Others got far more wrong than they got right. That wasn't necessarily apparent then, but it is now. When something was written, and the scientific community's response to it over subsequent decades, is of the greatest importance. Are you even familiar with the scientific method?
And as for tearing down the Sistine Chapel. |

And so, like Freud, you're wrong. Nice of you to admit it. |
