I would gladly pay that if the increase meant that more people would be out there to kick off bible thumpers, enforce bicycle rules, kick off peddlers, and deal with other annoyances.
Being crowded can't be helped. Some things can be. |
How often are you annoyed by the people you list? For me the answer is basically never.
But annoyed by other subway riders--standing in the doorways, not moving from in front of the door, brushing up against you as they pass by even though there's no one standing behind you and thus plenty of room to go around and people cutting in front of you as you wait for others to get off or just cut in front of you because they figure no one is ever going to say anything about it, which just happened to me tonight.
Those are very common annoyances for me. |

Almost every time I take public transport. Which is infrequent. Thankfully.
Yes, I am bothered by those things too but the people blocking doors is easily fixed by simply planting your elbow in their back and keep walking.
Also, people who hold their phone out almost arm-length away from their body while the train is crowded. I have knocked a few phones out of peoples' hands before.

I don't easily descend to that level, thus the annoyance. |

I tolerated it until I missed some stops and couldn't get on the train. Once bitten twice shy.

They need to do a better job of busting fare evaders aka turnstile hoppers. I still see it quite a bit even in this day and age. |

The only ones I've seen do it are the homeless. Who else is doing it--students, visiting Swedes? |

I've seen a mom or two do it. Their kid will walk under and then they'll duck under too, then just go on about their day. And if they were homeless, they were the cleanest looking homeless people I've ever seen. |

That doesn't surprise me. And you know how it goes here--once others see someone getting away with it they're going to follow suit. |

Fare increases are going to do nothing to balance the budget as long as the elderly get to ride for free.
They can have 50% off, even 75% off, they can have subsidized fares or fare vouchers (up to a limit-say 100 or 150k won?), but they CANNOT and SHOULD NOT ride for free. Ever. |

A Korean adoptee from France bragged to me that he rode the subways free cuz he had little money. All he did was just jump the barrier and nobody reported him.
I've seen guys in suits do it, too. |

The fares have been announced to go up between 300 and 150 won.
Every station seems to have so much staff sitting in the back offices doing God knows what. Look at them and turnstile jumpers to balance the budget. That or start charging seniors a child fare. |

Every bank, every post office...
Maybe that's part the price of low unemployment (or low unemployment statistics)? |

Western countries have EI. Korea has construction.
That and many superfluous workers.
