Has anyone on this site completed level 4?
I have the test coming up at the end of the month and I was wondering what question people were asked in the speaking interview section for Level 4.
I feel like they will focus on one of the chapters involving pollution, population stagnation, or tourism but any extra info would be helpful.
To clarify, I'm asking specifically about Level 4 and not about the placement exam that just recently happened. |

When I tested, the showed a picture of a Korean funeral, and was asked about it
Thing was, that was something studied in level 3, but I tested straight into level 4..so I wasn't exactly prepared to describe with the appropriate vocabulary and explanation. I did ok I guess though. Afterward since I was American, she asked me to describe Thanksgiving.
EDIT: Dont make the mistake I did. When i took the speaking portion, I was expecting a question/answer format..like a conversation. She asked me "what do you see", and I replied basically "This is a funeral". She then kind of snorted, giggled, and went over to the next person that when asked "what do you see" answered and gave a whole memorized explanation describing it.
I was expecting to be asked to describe/compare before i began spouting off knowledge, sort of a "conversation". Apparently though, the thing to do is just keep talking and say as much as you can regardless of whether or not you are asked. I failed 4 on that time, and I'm sure it was because of that speaking test (speaking is my strongest point) |

So you are saying it is just a test of memory?
How very Korean of them. |

Nah, I'm not really saying that. I'm just giving my thoughts on how my own test went and and ideas in retrospect how I could have done better. When i took the test for level 5, it was much more of a back and forth.
Q: What do you see in the picture"
Me: This appears to be a Korean funeral service.
Laugh and snort.
Q to other girl: What do you see in the picture?
Her: This appears to be a Korean funeral service. In Korea, funeral rites last over a 3 days period. Families blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah...on like this for 2-3 minutes.
Proctor: Thank you with big impressed smile.
But that seems to be the way tests are done here. Ive done a total of 7 semesters in Korean university programs, and those tests are the same. The speaking portion is either memorizing and repeating some presentation you made, a prepared conversation you spent a few days making with a partner, or otherwise describing some topic you were told about days in advance and had time to prepare for. I never understood how this was a "speaking" test for anything other than proper pronunciation (which may in fact be the focus of a speaking test to them)
Anyway, best of luck on the test OP |

Thanks coralreefer_1 as always.
When I asked a friend who took a lower level she mentioned this as well. Each question is based on a lesson from the book and they expect you to regurgitate what you learned from that lesson.
I know the PDF of the books for all 5 levels are available online so I'll have to give them a look.
I was too busy to devote a lot of time to Level 4 so I'm hoping I can squeeze through as I won't have enough time again to repeat the course. |
