Quote:
The Department of Foreign Affairs says it's assisting two Canadians barred from leaving Malaysia amid reports the pair could be charged after allegedly posing naked atop the country's highest peak.

Quote:
Sabah's deputy chief minister Joseph Pairin Kitingan blamed the tragedy on 10 foreigners — including two Canadians — who "showed disrespect to the sacred mountain" by posing naked at the peak on May 30.

Can't give much credence to the deputy minister's seismological theorizing, but that doesn't change the fact that the behavior of these tourists was...well, the opposite of not stupid.

And it doesn't get much more cliched than stripping down and running naked somewhere on the hippie trail.

The worst part will be when they are executed for mass murder because they caused the earthquake by offending a sacred mountain.

In comparison, fan death seems almost credible.

And yet bible believers in the West also talk of a sacred mountain (Sinai)where YHWH appeared to Moses. "Take off thine shoes for you are on my sacred mountain." And Xians speak with awe of Mt. Zion. Pat Robertson blames 911 on gays and the New Orleans flooding a few years ago on abortion. Religion be whack.

Have these people never heard of geology?

It's not clear to me if they're actually going to be charged with causing the earthquake, or if that's just something the minister was babbling on about unofficially. If they just get charged with public indecency(or something along those lines), it won't be much of a story, unless they get some draconian punishment.

Mental note, check the local customs, and beliefs, before doing something stupid, and recording it at the same time.

From what I've been reading in Malaysian media, these guys were not only ignoring local custom, they were openly obnoxious about ignoring it.

Quote:
Sabah Parks director Datuk Jamili Nais said the four women and six men had split from their group and gone on to the south peak.

The tourist ignored the warnings from their mountain guide, calling him “stupid” and telling him to “go to hell”, when he pleaded with them to stop as they took off all their clothes and posed for pictures.

That Star article also makes the mystical interpretation of the events sound more like idle twitter chat, rather than any official statement. I'm curious to know in what context the deputy minister made the statements quoted by the CBC.

Good point. However, that is not the same thing as saying all cultures are worthy of respect. An earthquake was caused because someone insulted a holy mountain. It is very much deserving of ridicule.

If the Malay government wants to charge them with indecent exposure or blasphemy or whatever, fine.

Blaming them for an earthquake just makes them look foolish.

In another case a Saudi man who questioned Islam on social media has been sentenced to a thousand lashes (think about that) and a decade in prison. His wife and children have received refugee status in Canada.

Islam, all religion is wacky, but you are undoubtedly the wackist. (Sorry Scientology, maybe next year.)

Quote:
Malaysian police said Wednesday that they have detained four Westerners, including two Canadians, suspected of posing naked at the country's highest peak last month, just days before an earthquake killed 18 climbers on the mountain.

Police obtained a court order to detain them for four days while they're investigated for indecent behaviour, said Sabah state police chief Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman.

Anyway, The Star has some more detail on the possible charges...

Quote:
The four foreigners who have been remanded four days for allegedly appearing nude on top of Mt Kinabalu can a face a charge of performing an obscene act in a public place.

Lawyers said the remand order by a magistrate court was for investigations under Section 294 (a) of the Penal Code.

Doesn't say anything about causing an earthquake. Apparently, the obscenity charge could garner a sentence of three months.

Not sure if the charges are the same if it gets moved to the native court.

File under Not Helpful...

Quote:
“Mount Kinabalu. Time of my life,” one Canadian, Emil Kaminski wrote on Facebook, posting a photo where eight westerners clad only in underwear can be seen, looking at the cloud cover from the mountain top, their pants and shirts piled on the rocks nearby.

Quote:
Mr. Kaminski has taken to social media, arguing and taunting Malaysian officials about their beliefs.

“You don’t know anything about plate tectonics,” he said in a profanity-laced video on YouTube.
