*Off Topic Alert*
A poster had simply mentioned Korea's hills and I thought to mention that
last Saturday I caught a very small tick on my arm and flicked a rather large
tick off my leg on Sunday.
These majestic hills do have their own hazards like the potentially
dangerous and deadly SFTS virus, a recent gift from China.
The tiny one had the audacity to sneeze on me and the large one coughed
all over me...I tell ya~ just can't win in this country! *wink*
But seriously, any PMs with comments, questions, concerns
and I'll go ahead and start a separate thread on the matter with pictures to share,
but there is already enough concern and worry on poster's plates.
Please share factual info on the progress of MERS. I have
a 3-week-old so this is a legitimate concern and I will say that from my
understanding is that Daegu has one confirmed case, that person's family has
been quarantined (and stigmatized) and all businesses/schools attended
by that family is shut down for now. My place of employment (which is near the
MERS contracted individual's place of employment) has posted flyers with info and
set up a tent with a nurse to address concerns, hand out masks and generally be
of assistance. Also Dongsan hospital in Daegu is being vigilant as
all entrances have attendants asking questions and taking temperatures.
I'm personally satisfied with that~
For now, my hill hiking, subway riding days are done for the time being.
Ok, 'nuff said~ be cool, be healthy, game on fellas~ |

Anyone who can read Korean non-partisan news knows that there are people with MERS walking around before being quarantined or dying. There are several people who contracted the virus but not in hospitals, but this isn't being reported. Can you really trust the major news media? |

And I've concluded that they are actually spitting on the street more. It's non-stop, everywhere. Loud, assertive and disgusting. I wouldn't be surprised if they've concluded that spitting more will help cleanse their system and expel any MERS virus they might have caught.
The spitting has always revolted me here, but now that there's a MERs crisis (on top of the highest TB rate in the OECD) the ongoing spitting is challenging my last ounce of respect for this place. |

Are you like a town crier or something?
Holy shit, in a dense population of 50,000,000+, 31 people died. Regrettable of course, sympathies and kind wishes to all involved, but this basically screams out that people don't have anything else to fret about. |

He could at least make it regal.
Citizens of Seoul. On this the 27th day in the month of a June most grim. The pestilence that sweeps our land has claimed two more souls, who pass unto eternity to our great sorrow. Thus the reaper's toll now stands at thirty-one out of 181 so afflicted. It is with heavy heart that we inform you that a state physician, in solemn and charitable duty, has contracted the sickness that he himself sought to treat. We ask that Providence extend a merciful hand unto our land and lift this plague from our realm. |

Since the MERS crisis started more people have undoubtedly died in traffic-related deaths in Korea because traffic laws aren't enforced. Last week I saw a guy on a motorcycle fly through a red light as cars were encroaching on him from all sides. On the back holding on for dear life was his girlfriend with the mandatory face mask....but no helmet.Sorry love, but that mask isn't going to do you any good as your head smashes into the concrete at 70 mph.
Only in Korea.
face mask: check
helmet: don't own one

You misunderstood the situation. The girl in the mask was merely preparing herself against MERS when she inevitably gets her head smashed in from a crash and ends up dead or as a vegetable in a hospital. Though, I think she hasn't thought ahead and wondered if she can still wear the mask whilst a tube is stuck up her nose to take in her hospital food. It might leave a small enough gap between her mask and face to let the MERS in; the least of her worries. |

That's one of the funniest posts I've read in a while. I have to admit I've actually been using candy bar's posts to keep updated on MERS.
Maybe there could be a compromise where each update is written like a reddit post, starting with the the long, regal version but with candy bar's short version at the bottom as the tl;dr. |

Roughly every six months or so, Steelrails will align the appropriate measures of humor, brevity, and tongue-in-cheek wit and write a real gem of a response to something...
...only to thereafter proceed to get mired down for another six months in a plethora of basher vs apologist debates that no one reads any more except the arguing posters. I'd be willing to bet that even the Naver "ESL Cafe translation" cafes have even gotten bored with this place and hung up their boots.
It's a shame because he demonstrates a great deal of potential, as evidenced by the quoted comments. |

I have to admit, on Gorf's board, when it was active for those couple of months, I had a blast not getting dragged into minutae and detailed arguments, but instead just posting stuff like what I wrote above or firing of curse-filled blasts and one-liners.
I enjoy arguing, so I need something like this to get that out of my system, but I do at times wish I had a sock account that only did "neutral" stuff and just focused on humor or cynical/absurdist takes on life.
Anyways, cheers guys. |
