So Windows 10 is now out, Internet Explorer is no longer the default browser anymore. Who's tried it so far? |

Non-techie here!
How difficult is it to install? Do I need to back up stuff to be safe? |

It installs like any other Windows update, and after installing it it even remembered that I was 14 minutes through a video in Chrome and restarted it from there. Files, language settings, everything was exactly the same.
It also puts Windows 8.1 into a folder in case you want to revert to it, and you have 30 days to do that if you decide you want to go back. |

^^Thanks, but I just read this article from CNet that says it's better to do a "clean install", or otherwise performance will be "adversely affected".
Three ways to install a clean version of Windows 10 onto any PC.

Edge is the default browser now and it doesn't support ActiveX, but if you go to a site that needs it it will still prompt you to use IE:

So IE is dead but can still be resurrected at a moment's notice. |

Before seeing this, it still wasn't entirely clear to me what I would gain by upgrading to Windows 10 from 7 (I don't care about Directx 12), but if this were true, the matter is more or less settled. Even if I'm going to purchase something, I like being able to download a torrent version of it first and make sure it works well for me. For example, I wanted to download Planescape: Torment off of gog.com (a wonderful business model, by the way; I've purchased a large number of games from them on principle), but I wanted to be sure it would work well on my computer first, so I downloaded the torrent, and since I could see it ran without problem on my machine, I went ahead and bought it on their site. The idea of my own operating system constantly monitoring me for violations of a set of laws which I don't even support is not charming.
The comments section contains an article saying, "However, it has since been pointed out to us that this claim is false; the agreement in question only pertains to services provided to you directly from Microsoft, and does not apply to Windows 10," which makes it sound like the implications in the article above aren't true, but absent any serious, compelling reason to upgrade, I still don't see any reason to bother, especially since it's not entirely implausible to me that the limited "piracy detection" system or what have you could be expanded over time. |

I never cared for Facebook and never will. I don't like Facebook formats and I intend to stick with Windows 7. |
