I know most people would say "none of the above" to this question, but if you had to choose one, what would it be?

For some reason I equate OB and Max as being the lower end, and Cass being in the middle and Hite being on the top. That might have to do with marketing, celebrities on posters and maybe because Seoul Pub has OB as their only Korean draft option.

What is your impression of the big 4?

Poll above.

Just curious but why would you devise a poll that you already know most people would not be interested in answering? Personally my honest answer would be whatever happens to be on tap in the bar I'm in when I realise that I'm too drunk to be bothered about enjoying the taste of beer anymore. You might as well construct a poll on people's favourite type of Korean ramen

I voted Hite. But I've been told that Kloud is one of the best beers out there. Many claim it's better than most of the big label european beers. My understanding is that Korea is becoming a beer connoisseur market.

Edward, Im opening a restaurant/bar and I only want to have one Korean draft beer available. I would prefer to have either Cass or Hite but I wanted to get other opinions and impressions of the four big brands.

Also, what would be so weird about a poll about Korean ramens? They're so many, there are lots of articles and even short videos on the subject.

Thanks Candybar, i noticed Kloud on the distributor list as well, more expensive than the other Korean beers but as you're describing, i guess for good reason.

I would go with Hite or Kloud.

Hite is the classic.

Kloud is the new generation.

I'd go with Kloud. It's owned by Lotte and is no way better than most European Macro-Lagers...though that isn't really saying much as most of them are no better than Bud themselves.

From the list I'd go with Hite.

Ah OK that makes sense. Cass probably, no idea why. Probably because it was the first one I tried.

It's a spectacularly dull subject. But start one if you want, I'm sure some people would respond.

Cut Max of the list. Hite or OB, or Kloud.

No love for the Max!

My personal rankings...

Bottle
Max
OB Golden Lager
Kloud? (not enough experience)
Hite/regular OB
Cass (have had some skunky bottles before)

Draft
Any non-Korean draft
Max
Red Rock
OB/Cass/Hite
(would imagine Kloud would rate at least around Max/Red Rock level, have never seen it in draft form)

With draft, it doesn't really matter in the end because they all taste pretty awful, just keep the lines clean to maintain that crisp yet blah-inducing watery flavor representative of Korean beer and minimize the inherent skunkiness.

A few amusing quotes from the Korean beer Wikipedia page:

Quote:
Most restaurants and bars in Korea only have one of these beer brands on tap, as they are largely regarded to be similar in taste and price (they are mostly brewed from rice).

Quote:
Of Korea's mass-produced beers, only two are brewed from 100% barley malt, which are Max (Hite) and OB Golden Lager.

(I assume the barley stuff in the second quote is only referring to the bottled beers.)

Max isn't terrible for being a bland beer. OB is somewhat better. If you put OB in a bottle with some old 1910s midwest label that churned out uninspired local brew ala PBR or Old Style, you wouldn't hate it so much. It would actually pass as that regional cheap beer that you could get for a buck a glass during happy hour back home.

Hite occasionally gets this sort of wheaty taste if its relatively fresh and then rapidly degenerates into swill. Cass is just subpar blah.

Kloud sucks. I thought Dry Finish was better than that crap.

Just like "Buttwiper" from the USA, derisive terms like "sHite" and "(C)ass" apply to top brands here. Stop buying mass marketed swill and make your own instead.

Cass and Hite from the tap always gives me headaches. I figure that's not a good sign.
