Wes Craven, the prolific writer-director who thrilled audiences with iconic and bloody suburban slashers like “Nightmare on Elm Street” and “Scream” that made his name synonymous with horror, has died. He was 76.
In a statement, Craven’s family said that he died in his Los Angeles home Sunday, surrounded by family, after battling brain cancer.

I've never been a huge fan of the slasher genre, and took a complete pass on the Elm Street films. I guess Scream was kind of entertaining, and possibly started the trend of complete self-awareness in horror-films, which is not the standard posture for the genre.
I remember a made-for-TV thing he did in the 70s, starring Linda Blair, about a suburban girl who finds out that her cousin(or friend, can't remember) is really an evil witch.
