Hi. So I'm currently working in Korea and have housing with my hagwon. My girlfriend just went home for a few months and is coming back to teach. She has an offer from a school near mine, and they offer a housing allowance of 450,000. She is planning on living with me at my schools apartment, and just pocketing the housing allowance. Is this acceptable to do? Will the school offering the housing allowance want to see some kind of housing contract proving that she is using the allowance towards housing? Or is it just 450k no matter what. I would appreciate any information.

Thanks

Yes.

Is it a bad idea for her to tell the school she is doing this? Does she get the 450k the first day she arrives, or with the first paycheck. Just curious on the latter.

For doing what? Moving in with you or taking the allowance in lieu? She does not need to say anything about your arrangement. Does she have an option for, say, housing provided vs. allowance? If so, even in that case, she just selects the allowance. More likely there is no housing, but any mention of you to her school is not necessary. Regardless, allowance will be added to paycheck.

You don't need to tell anyone shit. They are not going to ask for shit either. Housing is in the contract and you get to do whatever you want with it. The only reason you have housing allowance anyway is so schools don't have to pay as much on your medical and pension. Essentially they just split your salary a little bit so there is less of a deduction for them.
